So you think you want to transfer? It's never the easy thing to do, but sometimes you've got to take that leap of faith and just do it. Here are some tips from a pro for transferring, how to do it right, and how to make the most out of starting anew.
1. It's okay to start over -- college is at your own pace.
Don't get caught up on which credits didn't transfer or new requirements that put you behind schedule. There are plenty of options and time to catch up.
2. People suck, so don't beat yourself up if you don't find your friend group right away.
It's okay to be picky when making new friends. You experienced making friends with the wrong people when you went through freshman year the first time, don't feel bad for being more careful this time around.
3. Don't freak out on a daily basis -- it will cause premature wrinkles.
You don't want to be mistaken for 30 when you turn 25.
4. Put what people are going to think of you out of your mind.
Half the time, people are more occupied with their own lives anyway. All that really matters is your own happiness.
5. Make sure you are transferring for the right reasons, not to avoid that guy you shouldn't have gone out with or that girl you had middle school-like tension with.
This one is self-explanatory. Trust me, I've been there.
6. Get involved.
There is no better way to make friends than finding people who are interested in the same things you are!
7. Learn to make time for yourself.
Don't neglect yourself, especially when taking the time to learn a new social environment. Find your own zen, whether that is drinking a cup of tea or watching an episode of Downton Abbey.
8. Don't worry about fitting in.
You chose to transfer schools because it's where you feel most comfortable; don't doubt yourself.
9. Focus on the everyday outcomes that will contribute to the bigger picture.
Turn in your homework, study for tests and don't procrastinate. You could hear this all day long, but it won't make a difference until you figure out what everyday contributions will positively effect your long term goals.
10. You didn't fail.
Last but not least, transferring doesn't mean that you failed at your previous college. It just means that the school you thought was for you really isn't, and you're ready to try something new.
