10 Times You Cheered For The Bad Guy

Bad guys need love too.

Disney's Nightmare Before Christmas

Sometimes it is just irresistible to love the bad guy. There are times we cannot help but cheer on our criminal heroes, mainly because the story is being told from their point of view and is shedding a softer light on the protagonist criminals. Half the time we are so caught up in cheering them on that we forget they are the bad guy. So I decided to make a short list of some of the most supported criminals from movies and TV shows. (Note that these are not super hero movies, because I did not want to list villains like the Joker that are pinned against a popular hero.)

1. "Animal"

Throughout the movie Marvin Mange, the man character, was running wild. We were behind him and his wild antics as the lovable character woke up in trees after a successful night of rampaging. We were even rallying behind the bigger villain during the wild plot twist that showed his romantic interest as the one causing all the real mayhem.

2. "Mega Mind"

Though the villain in this movie did end on a super hero note, we could not help but love this goofy character from the get-go. His antics were felonious, but his enchanting personality drew us to his in.

3. "Now You See Me"

We could not help but hope for criminal friends to achieve their endeavors and avoid getting arrested. Encouragement sprang from our lips every time the group was getting chased–or got in a fight with the cops. We were on their side for every robbery and every escape as our criminals made history. Of course, it does not hurt if you look like Dave Franco . . .

4. "Devil’s Rejects"

This one is a little more, well, crowd specific. Those of us who love a good horror movie could not help but fall in love with these hilarious characters. Their devil-may-care attitude made us laugh along even as they were threatening people’s lives...or was it just me?

5. "Shawshank Redemption"

This one is one of the most popular movies of our time. Many people cannot seem to resist to love Andrew Dufresne as he swears his innocence. We hope that his dreams will be realized as we marvel at his imagination and spirit.

6. "Blues Brothers"

I know it does not really seem like these guys are the bad guys because they are on “a mission from God.” From the standpoint of social convention and the law, these guys are criminals. The movie literally starts out with Elwood picking up his brother Jake from prison. That does not stop us from seeing them as good guys, and neither does them driving through a mall, destroying public property, or even the high speed chase that causes the second largest amount of car crashes in movie history (topped only by the "Blues Brothers" sequel).

7. "American Horror Story"

In seasons one, three, and five, we could not help but love the murders presented to us. The most famous bad guy to come out of "American Horror Story" is one of the most heinous: Tate Langdon. Featured on everything from buttons, to book bags, to shirts, Tate certainly has a huge following and the love of many fans despite the murders, rapes and tortures he inflicted throughout the show.

8. "Dexter"

"Dexter" has us on the edge of our seats every episode. Constantly hoping our murderous protagonist never gets caught. Even after killing his own brother, he still had our support. He is actually in an elite group of psychopaths (by definition) that were cheered on throughout his murderous tendencies.

9. "Nightmare Before Christmas"

Jack, the Pumpkin King, literally scares people for a living and brags about it via beautiful song. When he realizes there is something missing in his life he decides to kidnap Santa Claus and steal Christmas. Now having successfully stolen someone else's holiday, he decides to transform this once joyful holiday into, well, a Nightmare. We forgive him throughout the movie and even sympathies for him because the songs are just too catchy to hold it against him.

10. "Young Guns"

Billy the Kid is the most infamous gun slinger in history. In both movies. he is witty and sarcastic. His personality really makes him hard to hate and easy to idolize. Emilio Estevez's infectious smile only added to the charming character of Billy the Kid, making the man with the biggest head count a modern hero.

Sometimes we cheer on the bad guy without a second thought, because the story is portrayed from their point of view. If they are really good, we do not even view them as criminals, like in the "Blue Brothers." But hey, the bad guys need love too. So keep cheering on your murderous heroes, as long as the ones you continue to cheer on are fictional.

Tschüss!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
