Taylor Swift is obviously successful enough that she can afford to skip a college education, but if I'm being honest, I've occasionally stopped what I'm doing and turned up the volume on iTunes (not Spotify, lol) because I think she's literally singing about me and the lives of my college friends. It’s like she knows…
1. We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time. It’s miserable and magical ("22").
RETWEET. College = happiness beyond belief, more freedom than ever, new levels of confusion and a kind of loneliness you’ve never experienced before (whether you admit it or not).
2. So here I am in my new apartment in a big city, they just dropped me off. It’s so much colder than I thought it would be, so I tuck myself in and turn my night light on ("Never Grow Up").
Move-in day in a nutshell. Nothing really prepares you for the first night you realize you’re on your own. Also, you really haven’t lost the way that you dance around in your PJ’s getting ready for school. Oops.
3. She wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts ("You Belong with Me").
Every day, amirite?
4. Seems like there’s always someone who disapproves. They’ll judge it like they know about me and you. And the verdict comes from those with nothing else to do ("Ours").
It’s like she’s walked into the library wearing Greek letters on her shirt and felt the opinions people instantly form about her based on them. We’ve all been judged by people who don’t even know our name. So keep preachin’, Taylor. We need to remember that people throw rocks at things that shine.
5. But you throw your head back laughing like a little kid. I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny, ‘cause he never did ("Begin Again").
So many under-appreciated kids become freaking studs in college. You leave your reputation behind, and people can now see you for who you truly are. Also, there are so many different types of people on a college campus that you can wear all the ugly shoes in the world and listen to all the indie rap albums you want, and you will still find people who appreciate you.
6. To the fella over there with the hella good hair, won’t you come on over here and we can shake, shake, shake ("Shake It Off").
Said no one ever. Seriously, if you’ve ever said this to someone, please contact me and share what happened next.
7. There I was again tonight, forcing laughter, faking smiles, same old tired lonely place. Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes, and vacancy vanished when I saw your face ("Enchanted").
Forced laughter and fake smiles are exactly right. You know you can think of those moments first semester when you pretended to have the time of your life because you didn’t want anyone to know just how tired and lonely you actually were. But then you met those people who broke through your walls of insincerity, and life got really good.
8. [Insert friend] gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind, and we both cried.
Guys who break your best friend’s heart break your heart, too. She will never forget the nights you sat in her dorm room and hugged her and helped her rip up stuff and cried with her because you hated seeing her like that. And you know she would do the same for you.
9. Can’t you see that I’m the one who understands you? Been here all along, so why can’t you see you belong with me? ("You Belong with Me")
You know you’ve thought this about someone you met in college. You just have.
10. I said remember this moment in the back of my mind- the night we stood with our shaking hands, the crowds in the stands went wild… One day, we will be remembered ("Long Live").
The perfect words to describe those nights when you have a test the next day, and you’re hanging out the window in your best friend’s car eating a Frosty and singing at the top of your lungs instead of studying. There’s really nothing too special about it, but in that moment, you’re legendary.
