TV, more often than not, is used as a platform to share ideas and promote creativity through art. Some shows are created to entertain, others to inform, and some do both. Steven Universe is a wonderful example of television that promotes healthy relationships, equality, diversity, and more. It is also full of moments with insightful observations. Here are a few of those times:
1. When Pearl called out humanity and our weird obsession with cat videos.
I don't know why I care about what Kim Kardashian says, but I do. I also like watching washing machines bounce on a trampoline for no apparent reason.
2. When Dog-Copter told Steven the secret to being cool.
For a fictional crime-fighting canine with a helicopter attached to his back, he's as real as can be.
3. When Amethyst schooled Steven on being your own person.
Steven loves humanity so much, sometimes his empathy overrides his own self-worth. Amethyst is that kick in pants you need when you forget you matter, too.
4. When Garnet had to tell Jaime what love really is.
Garnet is a fusion of Sapphire and Ruby and she is literally a walking, talking relationship. Garnet is love incarnate; she knows what's up.
5. When Pearl held a mirror to society and then held nothing back.
When a kid's show provides intelligent perspective and your favorite show still uses the spit-take gag unironically, you may need to find a new favorite show. Preferably, Steven Universe.
6. When Rose Quartz and Greg proved to be the best couple.
Greg and Rose's love transcends time and space in the form of Steven who is the product of two rad individuals. They unequivocally prove true love is possible.
7. That one time Sour Cream decided to get a little existential.
I can rave to the idea of french toast for every meal. Breakfast is subjective, you can have bacon and pancakes whenever you want.
8. When Steven taught us that loving what you do is just as important as doing your best.
When you enjoy what you do, putting in work doesn't feel hard. That's the difference between a job and a career.
9. When Greg reminded Connie that even though they weren't Crystal Gems, they were humans and that is enough to make you special and important.
You matter because you exist. No one can make you feel inferior without your permission. Celebrate who you are because there is no one in the world like you.
10. When the newly formed Garnet battled with her identity.
Sometimes, we fail to put ourselves first and get swept up in things that we aren't meant to do. Sometimes, you need to look inside and reevaluate. Figure out what makes you happy and what makes you feel complete, even if it wasn't part of your original plan.
Steven Universe constantly proves to be ahead of its time. The characters have depth and never falter in the face of a challenge. These guys have no problem schooling humanity on what it means to be compassionate, fierce, and extraordinary... or in other words, a how to be a Gem.
