Let's face it: more times than not, your mother has told you something that you believed to be completely ridiculous, but in the end she was right. You never want to admit that your mom was right, but she does gloat about these victories behind your back. These are things that my mother has said to me throughout my life, and it was not until I got a little older that I realized how right and how important these words are. For me, my mom went from someone who embarrassed me (out of unconditional love) to my absolute best friend. This one's for you mom, love you lots.
1.“Your face is going to get stuck like that!”
Not necessarily, but the face you present to the world will be what people use as their first impression of who you are. And we all know first impressions can last a lifetime. So for your mother’s sake, present the face she would approve of. You’ll thank her later when people tell you how beautiful you are.
2. “You only have one body”
Aside from being logically true, this statement is very important in every aspect. Love your body because your mother loves it more than you ever could. Would you ever want to purposely destroy something your mother loves?
3. “There will be more”
There will be more girlfriends and boyfriends, more friends, more people who will make you feel just as good or better than the ones before. Your mother knows who will stay in your life and who won't. So just let it be. Let the ones who want to leave leave cause there are like seven billion people in the world, you’re bound to find one that loves you just as much as your mom does.
4. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine”
Coming from a family with siblings, this is the biggest lie ever, but the sweetest one in fact. She sees how much love, light and happiness you radiate and are the only reason she gets out of bed every morning. The bigger the family the more reasons she has but no matter the size, the same amount of sunshine.
5. “Take a sweater”
You look cold. You’re cold--just admit it. No one ever wants to admit that mom was right when she said this but she always is. For moms piece of mind always take the sweater. Once again you’ll thank her later.
6. “Text me when…”
When you get home, when you get to the store, when you get to the concert…..
You’ll never realize how important this is until your concern is not just for yourself but someone else too. It’s not to be annoying or to control you. It’s to know you’re safe. It’s to know you’ll be fine, even if mom isn’t there.
7. “You’re the best at…”
Soccer, music, writing, drawing, running. This will be the only person in your life that says you’re the best at something and honestly means it. She sees no one else’s ability, only yours and you are the best.
8. “Just be You”
Even when you didn’t know who you were, she never wanted you to try to be something you weren’t. She was right there by your side through the awkward middle school years and pushed you to be the best you could be. You may never see who you really are but your mom will. It's some weird magic trait they possess, they see our potential and who we are, even when we can't.
9. “Be nice to your siblings”
Yes, your snot-nosed brother or whiny sister will be your best friend. Every time your mother told you to bring your sibling and you didn’t want to cause they were “embarrassing,” just know, when everyone else leaves you, you’ll be happy to say you have your best friend. The older I get, the more I realize my mom was right, my sister is and always will be my best friend.
10. “Don’t give up”
She didn’t give up on you when you failed that test or lost that soccer game. She was right there by your side, cheering you on, being your biggest fan and pushing you to keep moving forward. Her biggest dream is to see you achieve yours. So do her this last favor, don’t give up on your dreams cause she never will.
