10 Thoughts While Road Tripping To School
Maeve Murray

Being from Houston, making it out to Winston-Salem, North Carolina is no easy trip. Naturally, my sister and I used an ungodly amount of our phone data before even starting the road trip and were therefore banned from using our phones without WiFi; In other words, no cell phones the entire trip. What could two college- aged girls, and their father, kind enough to grace them with his company, do for the entire trip? Here it is, the saga of the cross-country trip across our lovely nation.

1. If I were to compose an email to my favorite celebrity, what would I write?

Subject Line: Hi, Please read this it’s very important to me.

Dear Justin Timberlake,

My name is Maeve Murray and despite our age difference I am pretty sure we are meant to be. I have been by your side since Day One in *NSYNC and will always be there for you. #iwantyouback

2. I wonder why that driver is so mad at me?

Maybe this one is just me. I somehow, on every trip, manage to make some other driver mad by just doing my own thing on the highway. There’s nothing quite as welcoming as getting flipped the bird for a reason you are entirely unaware of (@thestateofGeorgia).

When someone honks at me and I have no idea what I did.

3. Why can’t I beat my high score on "Bejeweled"?

Preface: My dad was driving during half of the trip and I made it my only goal to beat the "Bejeweled" high score on his phone.

Let it be known, I did not beat his high score. Turns out my dad is a professional Bejewel-er. Who knew?

Let it also be known, I am a sub par Bejewel-er, at best.

4. Dorm decorations that I could make.

We are all starving college students at heart, are we not? I wanted to get a little thrifty this year to save money, so I used the ample driving time to do some research. 10/10 would recommend checking out Pinterest for some real money saving (and cute) dorm room décor ideas.

Yeah, my dorm room is going viral this year too.

5. Where is Usher from?

“You know I was raised in the A” -Usher, "I Don’t Mind."

“Peace up, A town down” -Usher, "Yeah!"

Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan, but which “A,” Usher? Austin, Albuquerque, Augusta, Atlanta, Anchorage?

Well for you curious minds, he was born in Dallas. Alas, he did spend a decent part of his life in Atlanta.

Even these puppies are confused, Usher.

6. What is the biggest city in each state?

Now this one was pretty much a quiz game. We pulled up the Wikipedia page of the top three biggest cities in each state and had a ball.

This is actually my dad and sister in the car.

7. What is the next hotel closest to the Buffalo Wild Wings?

Since we were free for all driving through our lovely nation, we had yet to make a hotel reservation. My dad sent me off on a quest to find a hotel that matches a very specific set of criteria: Near the highway, outside of Atlanta, and near a Buffalo Wild Wings.

Let me tell you, I know all of the Buffalo Wild Wings in the Atlanta area and the hotels within a five-mile radius. I still do not quite know why my dad loves Buffalo Wild Wings so passionately.

This one is my dad as we rolled into Buffalo Wild Wings.

8. If I were to try to jump out of the moving car, would I be able to live?

“Probably? But don’t try it.” -Owen Murray, Father and Doctor

See ya.

9. What is causing this traffic?

While driving into Tuscaloosa, Alabama, we hit absolutely bumper-to-bumper motionless traffic. Turns out closing a lane to do construction can really mess some things up.

How everyone actually feels sitting in traffic.

10. Are we almost there yet?

Yes, I used to ask this question when I was 5. But some things just never change.

We did make it. The kids are all right.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
