Living at college for the first time can be one of the toughest transitions ever, but once you get comfortable with your new room, new friends and new lifestyle, living at home seems to be a thing of the past. In my case, leaving my freshman dorm and new friends seemed to be the hardest thing I had ever done in my life. I thought it would be easier the second time around, but I was mistaken yet again. Leaving school at the end of sophomore year proved to be even harder than freshman year. Once I got home I felt like I was living a double life.
Here are 10 thoughts that ran through my head while at home:
1. How many days until I move back to school?
Move-in day seemed to be an eternity away. I downloaded two different countdown apps, and they only make the time pass by slower. At this point, I'm putting X's on every day that passes on my calendar.
2. Why is there no food in the fridge? Wait I have to pay for food now.
As much as I complained about the food from the dining hall, I slowly found myself missing it. I mean think about it. Food was always available, it never had to be cooked because it was already prepared, and even better, I never had to clean dirty dishes! All I had to do was swipe and go eat my life away. Now I have to either cook or go broke eating out all the time.
3. It's 10 p.m. ... should I go out? Oh god, I have to ask my parents. ...
Going out in school is easy — walk to your friend's dorm, stay as late as you want, then walk back to your room. No biggie. Home is a whole new ballgame. You have to make plans, find a way to get there, and, worst of all, you have to tell your parents when and where you're going and why. It feels like you time-hopped backwards, and you're 12 again asking permission to go out with your friends.
4. I have no friends.
At school your friends live so close to you all you have to do is walk there. At home it feels like your school friends live in another continent. No one is close to you, and suddenly you feel like a huge loner because you like your school friends more than your home friends.
5. I hate Snapchat.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, is worse than being home and seeing everyone's story is of them out with their friends, while you are in bed, and it's only 9 p.m. *checks stories sees everyone having fun* *cries* *cries some more*
6. I'm going to go hard and decorate my dorm room better next semester.
It's all fun and games until you see yourself in the mirror at TJ Maxx, and you have a new comforter, pillows, random mugs, socks, posters and a shower caddy in your hands. This is when you realize that you have gone overboard, and unfortunately, you only have $50 in your bank account.
7. I'm going to go back to school so skinny and brand-new.
Lets face it, everyone wants to go back all new and skinny. The gym suddenly becomes your best friend again, and you start to see progress one month in. Then, since you're home again, you try new things like hot yoga, cycling classes and even dare to dip into crossfit.
8. OMG I CAN DRIVE AGAIN AMEN
You + your car = happiness. But it's been a while, so you might be rusty and hit things at first. It's okay.
9. Should I buy new clothes?
A part of you wants to get cute new summer clothes, then the other part wants to save to get a new fall wardrobe since that's the wardrobe people at school are going to see. Then suddenly you're at the mall, and you've spent your entire savings, and life really gets put into perceptive.
10. How many more days now until I move in???
*rechecks countdown apps* Wow, it's only been a week??????
In all honesty, being at home can suck, but it's refreshing to come back to a familiar setting after a long school year. Then before you know it ... MOVE IN TIME!!!
I CAN'T WAIT TO BE BACK WITH MY GIRLS!
