Having a roommate is like having a sleepover with a friend every day, that is if they are your friend. There can be fun times, for example, watching Netflix and eating junk food and talking about life. However, there can also be times of conflict and uneasiness.
If you have never shared a room prior to attending college or even if you have, this new concept can be hard to adjust to. Here are the ten things you’ve said to your roommate more than once.
1. "Can you dim the light?"
Your roommate might be a night owl that stays up all night typing their essay due the next morning and all you can see is a huge glowing light coming from their screen. You want to yell and tell them to shut their computer, but instead, you opt for “can you dim the light.”
In the morning, you wake up with huge dark circles because that light was never dimmed.
2. "I should leave"
If your roommate has a significant other then the phrase “I should leave” will be said every time they come over. The room is too small and you can literally hear every part of their conversation and plus they will most likely be engaging in some kind of PDA you do not want to be a witness of.
You rather give them privacy and leave for an hour or so.
3. "The trash can is overflowing"
You will say this so that your roommate will get the memo and throw away the trash. You also most likely don’t want to throw the trash yourself because who does. It smells horrendous, and you cannot believe what a sloth your roommate is.4. "Can you help me?"
If you are struggling with an essay or having problems with a significant other, you will ask your roommate for their help or advice.5. "Could you turn it down?"
You are trying to study for a big exam and your roommate is watching The Voice, you try to concentrate but continue hearing Gwen Stefani in the background criticizing the contestants. You put on your headphones and still hear some background noise, finally, you tell your roommate, “Can you turn it down a bit, I am trying to study!”6. "Can I borrow that?"
If you are relatively comfortable with sharing things with your roommate then asking to borrow their sweater, their headphones, charger, or asking for some snacks will be a constant question.7. "We should go!"
College is a time of experimenting and going to different social events. Many college campuses have local bands or movie nights and of course, there are the sorority and fraternities parties. When hearing about a party or fun event, you will not want to go alone and will invite your roommate.8. "Don’t do that."
If your roommate’s life decisions are not the best, you will be inclined to tell them “don’t do that.” When you tell them this they might respond with “you are not my mother/father.” No one likes being told what to do, but you will likely continue saying it regardless.
