Moving out on your own is an exciting adventure, but it's also a big adjustment. The excitement behind your newfound freedom fades, and you'll find yourself reminiscing on the days spent under your parents thumb. As you reminisce, you may even realize you miss certain things about living at home. Despite having your independence, here are ten things you'll miss about living at home.
1. A home cooked meal
Does anyone even like Ramen?
2. Your pet
You may not miss the times they peed on your rug, but they are still a part of your family and it will be hard not to see them every day.
3. Not paying bills
Whoever said, "You can't put a price on freedom." clearly never paid their own rent.
4. Not having to make decisions for yourself
No one likes being told what to do -but when you get two hours of sleep because you decided to watch twelve episodes of Grey's Anatomy the night before, you may find yourself wishing someone was there to stop you.
5. Noise
Whether it be your siblings fighting or your neighbor's dog barking, there was always something making noise at your house. Now that you have roommates, they might have opposite schedules' as you and you'll often find it very quiet in your new home.
6. Not doing your own chores
Nobody likes doing chores. Even if you did all of your own chores, you could always rely on your mom to help you with them (even when she said she wouldn't.) Now you're forced to really be an adult and do everything for yourself.
7. Being yourself
Whether you eat every bit of food in the fridge or stay in your pajamas for three days, your parents wouldn't judge you because they already expect this of you. Living with new roommates might make you feel like you can't truly be yourself until you really get to know them.
8. Your favorite local restaurant/bar
Living in a new setting presents you with a variety of new places to check out, but nothing could ever replace being able to order "the usual" or the dive bar down the street that you and your friends always go to for their cheap beer.
9. Knowing what's going on
No matter how many times a day you talk to your family and friends from home, you'll still feel out of the loop knowing you weren't physically there for whatever they're telling you about.
10. Your parents
You'll miss your parents hugs' and advice. You'll even miss things that you couldn't stand, like their lectures - because only now do you realize those lectures helped prepare you to be an independent person who will be okay on their own.
Whether you're moving twenty miles away or two thousand miles away, living on your own is a big adjustment. It is normal to miss the familiar things about being home, but knowing you are able to take care of yourself and exercise your independence makes it all worth it.
