Summer is the time to take it easy, enjoy the nice weather, and find some funs things to do. That’s way summer is the perfect time to try something new or even just something you haven’t done in a while. Take a break from that summer job and try something exciting or comforting with this last month of summer. Here are some suggestions:
1. Hiking
If you’re an outdoors kind of person than you’re probably a pro but for those of you who may not step outside too much, take a hike. There are bound to be a couple trails close-by to most places and you can be one with nature for as long as you chose. Enjoy the soak in the view and weather, get a little sweaty, and take lots of beautiful photos. Go alone and clear your head or grab some friends and make it an adventure.
2. Concert
Summertime is the perfect chance to finally see that artist you’ve been dying to hear live. There are also tons of musical festivals in lots of different places to check out. You may just find a new favorite by checking out some local venues.
3. Reading
There isn’t must time or incentive to enjoy the new best-seller with all the reading you already have to do during the school year. So now that your schedule has cleared up a bit, why not try diving into a relaxing novel. Better yet, make an adventure of finding the perfect book by checking out an independent bookstore near you.
4. Writing
The last thing that you probably want to do after the school year after having papers due every week is to write. But if you’ve never actually tried writing for yourself, I encourage you to try. When pen touches paper (if you’re old-fashioned like me and don’t use a computer) you never know what will come out: journal entries, short stories, song lyrics, poetry, just let what’s in your head come out. Start a diary, write ideas in a journal, or maybe even try turning something you’re passionate about into a blog. Maybe even write for The Odyssey!
5. Crafting
Get creative this summer and try some DIY projects that look like fun. You can find thousands of crafts on Pinterest or YouTube with instructions and maybe even the ones to something you actually needed all along. If you can’t think of a place to start try searching for some cool dorm decorations to make before move-in day. Start off simple and work your way up to more complicated projects that require learning new skills and techniques.
6. Whitewater Rafting
Grab some friends and life vests and head to the nearest river. Well, the nearest whitewater rafting river that is. Go paddling along with some friends and enjoy the exhilarating ride downstream. Soak in the view as you wish-wash around and take some good action shots for the Insta. This may be one of the harder activities to find near you but there are usually more than just rafting at these location to take advantage of so definitely check it out.
7. Sports
Summer is a great time to get active and have a little friendly competition. Plan a baseball, soccer, football, or basketball game with a group of friends. If that sounds too intimidating try a game of tennis, badminton, volleyball or maybe even a round of golf with a couple friends for an hour or two.
8. Swimming
Probably the most predictable of summer activities but it is still worth mentioning if in case you haven’t had the chance to yet. The beach is most people’s favorite location for a good swim as long as you make sure to actually go in the water instead of tanning the whole time. If the beach is a bit far or not your ideal swimming spot, try a local pool whether it’s outdoor or indoor.
9. Learn Something New
If you have ever wanted to learn something new on your own now is the perfect time. If you have ever wanted to learn an instrument find some videos online to help you get started or maybe take some lessons. Maybe you can grab some friends and try your luck at making a delicious meal with the help of online recipes. You can also think of learning something academic like a new language or maybe even learn how computer programming. Pick something you’ve always wanted to learn and give it a shot it, you may actually be good at it.
10. Take a Day Trip
Take a train, bus, or maybe even road-trip to a city you’ve never been to and do some exploring. There are lots of cute towns to visit and spend some time spoiling yourself with some shopping and some fine dining. Check out some museums, zoos, amusement parks or landmarks that are a small trip away and get away from where you are just a day.
