10 Things I Won't Miss About Dorm Life

While living in the dorms is a part of the college experience that most people who continue their education will go through. For those who have experienced it, they'll tell you it's an experience all its own. There's a lot of things I've noticed I won't miss about living in the dorms.

1. The dining court food

Although delicious, the same type of food gets old after a while. Plus, all the fried food and dessert is tempting compared to the salad bar so my body will appreciate cooking at home again.

2. The lack of personal space

While my roommate and I get along considerably well taking into account the 11' x 16' area we have to share, I can't wait until I have my own room again.

3. The showers

From having to wear shoes while I'm in there, the gross hair on the walls, and having to walk down the hall in my towel, communal showers won't be making an appearance in my life again if I can help it.

4. Being sick

I've been sick so much this year and my doctor suggested it might be from being cooped up with a bunch of other people who are also sick. The bathroom stalls aren't the most comforting place to be.

5. The noise

Yes, I realize there will be a lot of noise with people living all around me. I won't miss being woken up at 2 am on the weekdays by drunk people slamming their doors shut and yelling down the halls, though.

6. Not having A/C

Not having A/C this year was miserable considering the fact that Indiana can be brutal in August. I know that I, and those around me, didn't sleep those first few weeks of the semester.

7. The rules

To try to make peace within the residence halls, it's obvious that there are some rules that will have to put in place. What I won't miss is getting messages threatening that we will be charged when someone takes a bucket from the hall closet.

8. Lack of privacy

Living in the residence halls mean everyone knows what you're up to from the people you have in your room to what you're doing in there. While I'm guilty of talking too loudly for all to hear sometimes, it'll be nice for people not to be in my business.

9. The laundry rooms

It's frustrating going to do laundry and there's not an available washer. What's even worse is someone being impatient and just taking your clothes out and setting them on top if you're not down there as soon as the clothes are done. Plus, $3 for a load of laundry is a little steep.

10. The urge to nap

With my dorm being by the academic buildings, I nap way more than I should. Living somewhat off campus will hopefully take that urge away.

While it's exciting to move out of the dorms, I'll miss having my closest friends right next door and not having to worry about making sure to pay my bills on time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
