10 Things I Wish I Could Tell My Younger Self

What I wish I would have known.

1. Join a club!

I was always afraid of joining other clubs in high school without friends for fear of not knowing anyone or worrying about what other people thought of me.

2. Don't purchase those 5inch high heels

Don't do it. They'll hurt your feet and you'll never wear them more than once for 30 minutes at a school dance. Save yourself pain and money and opt for flats instead.

3. Realize when it's time to walk away

Don't pour your time and energy into a friendship that isn't meant to be. I finally ended a friendship after 6 years because it just wasn't healthy anymore. Sometimes friendships aren't meant to be, they're just to help you get going.

4. Don't worry about being in a relationship

There may be pressure in high school to have a significant other but once you start college, you realize there's more to life than dating someone for the sake of dating because it's "cool."

5. Learn how to say "no."

Whether it be to peer pressures or overcommitment, know what your limit is.

6. Practice setting goals

Create something to work towards as motivation. If you can't set a goal to finish schoolwork on time, what's keeping you accountable to complete tasks post high-school/in the working world?

7. Be nice to everyone

This is kind of a given, but you never know who you'll end up working for, and in general, you never know what's going on in someone else's life.

8. Networking is everything

One thing I wish I learned when I was younger would be to start building connections. Teachers, family friends, and people from the community may know someone who would want to hire you after you graduate. Be nice to people because you may end up working for them someday. Many people are hired because of their connections, not just their extensive resume.

9. Practice self care

Even taking 30 minutes out of my day to destress and relax would have been beneficial. My study habits from high school caught up with me once I got to college. Spread out your assignments and tackle them one by one instead of doing everything at once.

10. Get enough sleep.

Not enough sleep can lead to falling grades and health problems. It's worth it to skip doing your makeup in the morning for the few extra minutes of sleep. Chances are, no one is paying attention to your makeup or outfit.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
