The summer before your freshmen year of college is often viewed as the last summer of childhood - the last summer of innocence. But, I see it as the best time to explore your interests, plan your future, and say "yes" to risks and chances. Here are ten things to do with your best friend before you leave for college.
1. Make a playlist for each other
Throw in bass-influenced songs for tailgating, a calm soundtrack for studying, and that one song you both know every single word to.
2. Visit your high school one last time
If your college is on the quarter system, drop by your high school if it’s in session and revisit your favorite teachers, underclassmen, lunch spots... or see which new seniors have moved into your old locker, parking spot, or bleacher section.
3. Open when...
Write letters to your future selves with words of encouragement, inside jokes, or embarrassing stories. Seal the letters and save them to read for those rough nights.
4. Go to your favorite restaurant, café, or dessert shop
Eating dining hall food everyday will become mundane depending on which college you go to. Dress up and bring a camera, and you got yourself a photo shoot!
5. Go on a spontaneous road trip
Time for those last-minute senior trips, whether that may be across the country or simply to the grocery store.
6. Attend a rave, concert, or music festival
EDM, Country, or Kendrick Lamar; there's a music performance for everyone.
7. Sleepover one last time
Unless your BFF happens to also be your college roommate, be sure to have a slumber party or pull an all-nighter together!
8. Set up times to call or FaceTime each other
Have concrete plans to ensure you both stay in touch after heading to college!
Bonus: Share your school schedules with one another to stay informed of important dates, such as "Dead Week" and holiday breaks.
9. Hike up to a viewpoint and watch the sunrise or sunset
Alternative: Climb up to a rooftop for the perfect view of cotton candy skies.
10. Find closure
If you or your best friend have bad blood with an old classmate, lingering feelings for a long-term crush, or any other unsettled business, take the initiative and reach out. Don't wait for the other person to confess your feelings, since you'll probably never see them after this summer.
But, most important of all, be present and enjoy each other's company for the time being.
