10 Things That Only Happen at Small Universities
Alderson Broaddus University

Small colleges are all over the United States. I am lucky enough to go to one. Philippi, West Virginia is the home to Alderson Broaddus University. It is my home among the hills. It is a place that I love very much...but also can't wait to leave. Even though small colleges are different across the United States, every student who has gone to one knows these 10 things to be true.

1. "It's a small school in the middle of nowhere. You've probably never heard of it."

I can't tell you how many times I have said this in my years here. Nine times out of 10 no one will never have heard of your school. But, whenever someone does know it, there is this excitement that washes over you. We can't explain it, it just happens.

2. You can only buy your schools gear at the bookstore.

Victorias Secret doesn't carry it, so you most likely won't be getting a bedazzled hoodie anytime soon (unless your bookstore carries it).

3. "Skip class? But I have that professor again later today."

It's not uncommon that you will have the same professor multiple times in the day. Want to skip your morning class? Better be ready to explain where you were to your professor that afternoon.

4. You know where your professors, staff, and faculty members live.

You probably went to your professors how for dinner. You probably drive by the provost's house daily. Chances are you can give directions to the president's house.

5. What is syllabus week?

My big university friends talk about this "syllabus week." I shake my head like I understand, but I don't. We are lucky to get a syllabus day. For real, though: on the first day of class you'd better come prepared to take notes.

6. You have formed attachments to faculty and staff members families.

You know their child's name, their birthdays, where they are from, where their spouse works. What their parents and siblings are like. You hear the funny stories about their dog, or they see you buying a 30 rack from the gas station (no worries, you probably don't have their class the next day).

7. Living off campus is unheard of

"You mean to tell me not everyone lives on campus all four years?" I'll admit it, sometimes I forget that at other schools it's uncommon for seniors to still live on campus and have a meal plan. Other big university students might say something about you living on campus as a senior, but hey you still have a meal plan and get free laundry.

8. Greek Row?

Nope, not a thing. How about a greek suite in a residence hall. Greeks are all over campus!!

9. You're in Everything

Most of the time you're going to be in a ton of extracurriculars. Sorority? Check. SGA? Yep. Spirit club? Uh huh. Intramurals? Yeah. Do you ever sleep? Nah.

10. You are a family

Because your school is so small, you know everyone and everyone knows you. Teachers, bosses, housekeeping, the president, it doesn't matter what position they're in if you know them by name and know that they will support you in everything. Through your four years you will have a home away from home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
