10 Things Tallahassee Native College Students Are Tired Of Hearing

TCC, FSU and FAMU kids can all agree.

1. "You must go to a lot of parties."

Actually, no. While I'm always up for a good time and having fun, I don't define fun entirely by how much alcohol I'm consuming. A Friday night for me will usually consist of hanging out with the same people I always do while at the same time trying to be in bed early enough to where I get enough rest for my 11-4 Saturday shift.

2. "So your parents must have gone to the college in your hometown."

Kinda. My mom graduated with her AA from the community college and I'm still not sure about my dad but no, neither of them graduated or even attended Florida State.

3. "Do you go to all the football games?"

Okay, this one is a yes. Even when I went to a college 4 hours south I would make the long drive to cheer on my Noles.

4. "Did you not get into FSU?"

Contrary to what you may think, my first choice school wasn't Florida State, it was actually a small christian school in Lakeland, FL and when I left there after two semesters I transferred to community college. In fact, I didn't even apply to FSU.

5. "Do you want to go to Chipotle?"

No. My heart belongs to Moes and Moes only. You can have your oh-so-precious burrito bowl and I'll enjoy my tofu stack and free chips.

6. "The beach is so far..."

Fam, if you drive south a little longer than an hour and you are going to drive into the Gulf of Mexico. For the Tallahassee college students who don't know, the closest beach is 54 minutes away and Wakulla Springs is even less than that.

7. "Tallahassee, more like Tallanasty."

Please take a day to enjoy one of the countries best Parks and Rec programs and in addition to that take a drive down a canopy road while you're at it. Tally is the best and Gainesville is called the swamp for a reason.

8. "There's nothing to do."

Well we've all said this at some point, but go try living in Lakeland, FL for a year and then maybe I'll listen.

9. "Why are you obsessed with Whataburger?"

Why aren't you? It's always open, reasonably priced and the food is consistently good. My reaction to someone saying they don't like Whataburger is the same as someone saying they're a gator fan.

10. "You must be dying to get out of this town."

I was and now I couldn't be happier to be back, Tallahassee is the best college town there is and I couldn't be more proud of my 850 area code.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
