Humans choose to express themselves in many different ways, be it the cliques they join, the clothes they wear, the music they listen to, or through artistic expression. I, personally, choose to express myself through forms of body modification. Time and time again, I have heard the same, judgmental things from many different people, and from what I have heard from my pierced friends, they aren't let off easy either. With that being said, here is a list of my top 10 least favorite things to hear about my body piercings.
1. Did it hurt to get your ________ pierced?
Nope. Not at all. Getting a needle stabbed through any part of your body is completely painless. You OBVIOUSLY don't feel a thing.
2. How are you going to find a job with all those piercings?
I am going to apply to different places, just like you and anyone else would. Piercings can always be taken out anyway!
3. But you have so much natural beauty.
Thanks, but I wonder what you say about me without my makeup as well.
4. What made you decide to get that pierced?
It's simple. I saw it, I wanted it, and I got it. There is no life-altering reason to get a piercing.
5. What did your parents say when you got that done?
My parents love, respect, and support my decisions, even if it may not be necessarily their thing. All I ask is that you show me the same respect that they do.
6. Aren't you afraid of what you will look like in 20+ years?
:
Let's face it - I am going to be old, saggy, and my body will be changing anyway. Beauty doesn't last forever. What harm will a few extra holes in my body do?
7. If you have a tongue ring, you must make out a lot, right?
Hey, let me tell you all about the term "aesthetic." By sexualizing lip and tongue rings, you are sexualizing the woman (or man) that they are attached to. This is very disrespectful and very rude.
8. Do you have any non-visible piercings?
AGAIN, THIS IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL AND VERY RUDE. AT THIS POINT, YOU ARE INVADING PERSONAL SPACE.
9. It's just a phase.
Of course it is, we've heard it all before. Even on the off chance you're right, and I end up HATING them one day, let me enjoy my piercings now, while I still can, please and thank you.
10. I hope you know they are permanent.
As I said before, piercings can always be removed. The holes are small enough to heal and usually won't be noticeable once jewelry is taken out. Piercings are far from permanent.
