10 Things Only SSHS Theatre Students Know All Too Well

South Side High School (located on Long Island in Rockville Centre, New York) is known for its varsity sports teams, having the international Baccalaureate diploma program, and of course, their theatre department. If you were a theatre kid who grew up in Rockville Centre and attended SSHS, there is no doubt in my mind that you won’t be able to relate to everything listed below. #theatrekidproblems

1. Knowing what ttn means

If you don’t know what TTN means, then this is the wrong article for you. Sorry.

2. The struggle of going to strike the morning after formal

Because you got (at most) 3 hours of sleep, were full on sparkling cider and cake, and stood on your feet for practically the entire night.

3. The only reason to be excited for the 1st week of school was due to the fact that fall drama auditions were coming up

Because when they announced the fall drama at banquet last spring, you were finally ready to audition because you had read the play over the summer and made sure to know each character by heart.

4. Anticipating thanksgiving break because the musical was always announced right beforehand

What’s wonderful about Thanksgiving break? Turkey, stuffing and the parade. All great things. But what’s even greater? Knowing what the musical was going to be.

5. Applying for a sponsors of the arts scholarship

Things to be grateful for in life: Food, Friends, Family, Health and Sponsors of the Arts. Especially when tech week rolled around and they provided dinner. What a time to be alive.

6. Living for those spring musical pre and post-show rituals

Pre show: The pulse, the bird, continuous, calling out a number and a line from the show, and of course, the quack.

Post show: Checkers, Wendy’s, diner night, and of course, formal.

7. The pantry diner or Mitchell’s Diner was your second home

(Or any diner for that nature) became a second home. Whether you ate there after rehearsal, or went there for senior speeches/post show dinners, the diner had a special place in your heart.

8. Stressing over quarterlies during tech week

Because rehearsing for a show after school every day in addition to homework, quizzes, and exams weren’t enough to add to your high school responsibilities.

9. Worshipping the pink flamingo

We all knew who the real MVP of South Side’s theatre department was.

10. Kelly!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
