10 Things Only People From St. Louis Understand
Elizabeth Wood

I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, but I moved to Texas when I was a sophomore in high school. After living in Texas for several years I realized that there are just some things that only people from St. Louis can understand.

  • Being “the best fans in baseball”: Let’s be honest, what would St. Louis be without the Cardinals? And who would we be as natives of St. Louis if we didn’t love them year after year? We are called the “best fans in baseball”. It definitely helps when your team is consistently good every year and have the second most World Series rings.
  • We all bleed blue: As much as we love our Cardinals, when hockey season comes around we trade in our red for blue. Nothing can keep us from cheering on our Blues every season (even if they haven’t brought home a Stanley Cup yet).
  • It's too soon to talk about the Rams: Yeah, we don't talk about that.
  • IT’S NOT PANERA: Enough said.
  • Toasted Ravioli: Yeah, it was invented here. But, it is almost impossible to get GOOD toasted ravioli anywhere else. The rest of the world is missing out.
  • Busch Stadium: The experience you get from going to Busch Stadium for a Cardinal’s game is like no other. Let’s be honest, you can’t explain it. Baseball is just different here.
  • The Arch: It’s our city’s monument and the Gateway to the West. But to us it isn’t just one of the biggest monuments in the U.S. it is a symbol of our home (and also a place we take frequent field trips to).
  • The Saint Louis Zoo: Not only is it one of the top zoos in the nation but it is also ABSOLUTELY FREE.
  • Our hate for Chicago teams: You’re not from St. Louis if you do not absolutely despise the Cubs or Blackhawks. (P.S. we beat the Blackhawks out of playoffs last season, no big deal).
  • We are proud to be from St. Louis: People from St. Louis are proud to be from here. No matter how far you go, your heart will always belong here.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
