After graduation, you find yourself counting down the days until you can move in at your new school. You will feel stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, but also excited! You have listened to your families advice on how to have a successful first semester, but there are things they are going to leave out. Here are 10 things no one will tell you about your first semester.Â
1. You will see people you do not want to see.Â
40,000 students on campus and you will still manage to see the a$$hole you mistakenly took to formal multiple times during the week. 40,000 students on campus and you still see the ten people from high school that your mother told you, "not to worry about because you will never see them around." LIES. You will perfect the, "look-down-pretend-to-text-avoidance-move," during your first semester, especially when you spot the hot boy you embarrassed yourself in front of the night before walking right towards you.Â
2. Naps save your life.
Whether you are staying up late to study or go out with your friends, you know that each day a nap will be a necessity. You start to plan your day around when you can nap because without one, you know you will be unable to function. There are two kinds of naps for a college student. The first is the, "Pre-Night Out Nap," which gives you enough energy to go crazy Thursday night after a week of no sleep and much stress. The second is the "Procrastination Nap." You will hate to love these naps. You will have so much to do that you decide to do none of it at all and instead fall asleep for three hours in the middle of the day. When you wake up, you feel refreshed and relaxed until panic mode sets in and you remember all the work you really should have done instead.Â
3. The Freshman 15 is a real thing.
There is nothing more eye-opening then coming home for winter break and having your mother say you look a little "heavy." Mothers always know how to make you feel so great about yourself! After the initial stages of being mad at her for being honest with you, you will think back to all the times you picked Chipotle over a salad or an hour of Netflix versus going to the gym. You will have a sudden burst of motivation to get back into shape before the next semester, but there is no denying that once you go back to school, the late-night pizza and all the drinking will catch up with you again.
4. It is hard to stay in touch with high school friends.
You will find yourself texting with your friends only a few times a month and Skyping your best friends less than you guys agreed on before you went your separate ways. This is okay! You were all busy during your first semester so they will understand why you only talk when you have funny drunk stories to share. No matter what, your friends will still be there to listen when you feel overwhelmed or miss home and when reunited over winter break, it will be like nothing has changed!
5. Some of your friends, or even you, will immediately get into a relationship.
There is a common perception that Freshman go crazy from the amount of freedom they now have, which includes random hook-ups. While this may be true for some, you will find yourself shocked when you see the promiscuous girl from high school posting pictures with her new boyfriend a month into the semester. Soon you will feel like everyone around you is dating (which is probably you just being dramatic), and you might feel rushed to find someone too, if you have not already. There is no rush to find a boyfriend/girlfriend during the first semester of Freshman year! If you or your friends are happy in a relationship then great, but there is no reason to feel bad if you are the single one in a group of taken friends. College in general is the time to work on yourself and figure out who you are before committing to someone else.
6.You will be excited to be home for winter break for about a week.
During finals you dream of a home cooked meal and a nice, big bed and luckily in a week you can have all of that during winter break. It will be nice to be with your family for the Holidays and to catch up with friends you haven't seen since the summer, but about a week in you will realize you are dying to go back to school. There is a lack of freedom at home that you receive at school and you hate having to ask permission to go out for the night. Being home is also soooo boring. You will go to a party with people from high school and think the whole time how lame it actually is. It will surprise you how much you miss your tiny dorm room and unsatisfying meal plan. You'll count down the days until you're reunited with the great friends you made first semester.Â
7. You are going to do stupid things.
You may think you have your head on your shoulders going into college and that you will always make the right choices. Your first semester will challenge everything you know and sometimes you are going to make mistakes. Whether you choose not to study and fail an important test or go out and party just a little too hard, these are all stupid mistakes that are understandable to make during this time period. Sometimes our dumb actions turn out to be kind of fun too...
8. You will meet people that are stuck in high school.
You probably have heard your parents talk about people that never shut up about their high school glory days. Yes, high school was a fun time, but it is so different from college and your first semester. Some people are going to have a hard time accepting the fact that just because they were the hottest girl in school or most athletic guy on the team before doesn't mean people care now. No one wants to hear about your high school GPA, ACT score or how popular you were. Those things don't matter once you get to college. People like this are the ones you want to avoid because you will constantly want to give them a reality check.
9. You become more responsible.Â
This first semester is the first time you will be completely dependent on yourself. Naturally, this will make you more mature. You will find yourself choosing to stay in when everyone else is going out or budgeting your money for the first time ever. It is easy in college to get distracted by the freedom and social life, but you accept that your main priority is to get an education. It's okay to have fun, but when you think about how much money is being poured into your future, you realize how important it is to be successful.Â
10. You appreciate your family more.
Think about all the times you've been sick and your mom has taken care of you. Or when you have had a bad day and your dad has told you a dumb joke that makes you laugh. These are things that you haven't appreciated until you are thrown into the real world and your parents aren't there 24/7. Your family is just a phone call away, but it is different than living in the same household as them. When you move out to go to school it is potentially the last time you will live with your parents ever again, which yes is exciting, but also kind of sad. Make sure you use the first semester to tell your parents thank you for everything they have done and work hard in school to make them proud.
