10 Things I Miss About Myspace
Popular Science

Do you remember Myspace? The social media site that was popular for teenagers before Facebook was a thing? Yeah, I know -- it's crazy to think that there was anything so popular before Facebook. Just take a minute to reflect back to those days. Facebook has been the most popular form of social media for about six years now. Before that, Myspace was all the rage for kids my age or older. Today I went and tried to log on to my old Myspace, and I realized I forgotten the password a million years ago. Then I started thinking about how awesome my page would look if I could have logged on. Facebook is obviously great, and almost every American uses it almost every day. But there's just something about the memories of Myspace that will always have it one-upping Facebook. I decided to remind you of 10 reasons Myspace was legend.

1. Your first Myspace friend.

Tom. Remember him? The guy who invented Myspace. The minute you finished creating your account you already had one friend. What was Tom's last name? No one seemed to know. Brightside of this: Even if you were friendless, you could create a Myspace and always know you had one friend. You could also never delete Tom from your friends list. Weird.

2. Profile layouts.

They taught you all about copy/pasting. All you had to search was "cute layouts for Myspace" and the search was endless. You were constantly updating it to have the best layout in your group of friends. THE BEST.

3. Your profile song that played when someone went to your page.

If you could pick JUST one, you were on another level because most of us just had playlists that ran through all our favorite songs at the moment. However, you could pick the order they played in. So many choices. New song every day? I think yes.

4. You could choose your top friends.

Top 8 was huge. You and your best friend got in a fight? Move her down to number 8, or off the list completely. If you were on someone's top friends, you were special. If you were that person's number one, you were the best. It was a constant competition.

5. Glitter graphics were so dope.

You used them for everything! They were in endless supply, you could find one that said anything, and they were so cute!

6. Customizing your "about me".

It took like 12 years to customize because you could never figure out the right thing to say to sound cool. You found graphics that you added to it, quotes, etc. It was a never ending process because, again, you always had to be the best.

7. Being able to always see the last time your best friend logged on.

Facebook only says "Active ___ hours ago", but Myspace told you the exact time, day, month, and year of your friends' last logins. There was no hiding anything.

8. Logging on and checking to see if you had new messages, comments, friends, etc.

The most exciting part of the day.

9. You could change your cursor to a cool symbol.

Mine was a sparkly cursor that left a rainbow trail every time you moved it. So, yeah. You could say I was pretty cool... and you'd be correct.

10. There wasn't an app for it.

To get to Myspace you had to get onto a computer; Not a smartphone, a computer. You had to type in www.myspace.com and log in. There was no app for Myspace. I'm sure some of you can't even imagine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
