10 Things I Learned In The First Month Of College

Hopefully I won't have as much to learn next semester.

10 Things I Learned In The First Month Of College
Olivia Stone

1. Don't wait until the third day to post a first day picture.

Yes, you sent the picture to your mom, but honestly everyone is curious to see what you wore and how the day went. Take the picture and post it.

2. Make your bed everyday.

You'll want to keep your door open and you never know who might walk in. Plus, there's always going to be tours coming through and if you're in your room and it looks nice, it might be more enticing for potential students.

3. It's like a giant sleepover every night.

Except you get to go back to your own room each night. Also, if you miss something to go to bed early, it won't be the end of the world. I promise, your friends will catch you up the next day.

4. Take advantage of the free food.

The karaoke at "Wings 'n Sings" might not have been the greatest, but man were those wings good. Most likely there will be free food at every event on campus, if nothing else, go for the food.

5. Don't text your mom walking down the stairs.

Trust me, you'll sprain your ankle. First injury of college complete.

6. FaceTime might be great and all, but Oovoo is so much better.

Who doesn't love a good video chat? Plus being able to see all your family and friends at the same time is an added bonus.

7. Keep in touch with your friends from home.

Group texts are fantastic. Even sending some good old snail mail is fun sometimes.(Yes, "Fam" I'll be sending out letters sometime soon.) Who doesn't like to get mail in their P.O. Box?

8. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Everyone of your professors wants you to succeed. They're there to help, not to drag you down. Even if it's a simple question, don't hesitate to ask, you won't be the first and you definitely won't be the last.

9. Call home as often as you want, or need.

Even just to hear a familiar, caring voice can sometimes make a good day, great. I know that even just to talk about my mom's day at work can make me feel like I'm in the loop at home. You're going to miss your parents and that's okay! They miss you too!

10.Have a blast!

You're a freshman. Act like an idiot. Go to the caf in your slippers because college. Walk to go watch a fight in the quad and then walk away and take a picture with the mascot statue. Make friends. Be kind to everyone that lives in your building, but more importantly your floor, and most of all, your roommate.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
