I grew up in as cliché a Midwestern suburb as you can imagine. Family homes, big backyards, children riding bikes, neighbors walking their dogs and doors always unlocked; people were friendly, and it felt safe. I lived in that home, surrounded by my family and friends, for 17 years. Walking the street at night or leaving the door unlocked when you ran a quick errand was typical. I never felt scared staying home alone or frightened by the random creaks the staircase made. Then at the ripe age of 21, I moved out—not to an apartment across town, but to an apartment across the country. I was alone in this endeavor (only physically, I know my family was only ever a phone call away). Even still, this new chapter in my life was full of uncharted territory: how do I set up my internet, how do I turn on my electricity, do I need to buy a shovel for the winter snow or does maintenance do that? I had so many questions and so little answers, but there was no turning back. I jumped in, both feet, without hesitation.
I’ve been on my own now for a bit and have definitely learned a few things.
1. Always Lock The Door
Common sense yes, but still a valid lesson. You aren’t in the ‘burbs anymore.
2. Don't Let Your Laundry Pile Up
You only have so many pairs of black leggings, and we all know you don’t wear jeans.
3. Buy Enough Food To Actually Get By
When that winter storm hits, you’ll be glad you have more than just apples and peanut butter.
4. Always Keep Extra Toilet Paper and Paper Towels
I mean… you never know when you may have a spill. My cat spills my wine all the time. (OK, OK, maybe that’s me).
5. Clean Up Your Apartment At Least Once A Week
And I mean really clean it. Sweep, mop, dust, tidy up, organize—get it done—you’ll be glad you did.
6. Don’t Assume Your Neighbors Will Be Nice
They might not wave and smile to you.
7. Don’t Assume They Will Be Mean, Either
They might wave and smile to you.
8. Take Full Advantage Of Not Having A Roommate
Walk around naked, don’t shut the door when you shower—own it.
9. No One Can Call You Crazy For Talking To Your Cat
Maybe you just want to talk to someone that gets you and that also can’t disagree with you.
10. If You Do Feel Lonely, Call Someone
Your friends and family will be there when the quiet is just too much. Invite a friend over or go to someone’s house, because being alone can be great, but being social is also healthy. (So I hear, anyway...)
