10 Things I Learned Being A Big Sister

Being a big sister is one of the best jobs in the world. It's not something you choose to be, it just sort of happens. Once you have her big sparkly eyes staring up at you, you realize it's a job you don't ever want to trade in. Friends come and go but your little sister is forever. You have a best friend for your whole life, doesn't matter your age difference. Sometimes it can be an overwhelming job, but good always outweighs the bad.

1. You're her role model.

Sometimes you forget, but she's always watching you. You always have to make sure you're setting the right example for her.

2. Patience really is a virtue.

It gets frustrating when she follows you everywhere, I know. She always wants to sit and talk as you use the bathroom, she wants to be in charge of the music as you take a shower. Having a living person as your shadow can work your last nerve, but she means no harm. She just wants to mirror everything you do because to her you're this rock star that she can only dream of becoming.

3. You have your own walking diary.

Although my sister and I are ten plus years apart, I tell her everything. I tell her all about my relationships that went wrong. I lay my head on her lap and she rubs my back as I cry about the fight I had with my boyfriend. I can trust her with my biggest secret and she'd hold it to the grave.

4. She takes all of your things, with a huge smile on her face.

That huge comfy t-shirt you bought on that one family vacation that you love more than anything in the world, yeah she took it. You may roll your eyes and put on your stern voice and tell her that after this one time she has to give it back. Deep down you know that it makes her happy wearing her big sisters clothes and you can't take that joy away from her.

5. She is the president of your fan club.

You know that you will always have someone in your corner chanting your name. To her, you can do no wrong. Everything you do is the greatest thing she's ever witnessed. As long as the both of you are walking this Earth she has your back no matter what and she will never let you forget it.

6. She teaches you the meaning of unconditional love.

Before her arrival you knew what love was, and if you're anything like me, you pour your love in to everyone. When this blue eyed angel entered this world and I held her in my arms I knew that I would never love someone the way I love her, she became my world. It's like my world paused and she's the only thing that matters.

7. You get to walk her through the ways of life.

I get to explain my life stories, the classes I took, the friends I made, the rules I broke (sorry mom). You walk her through the mistakes you made as you were growing up and you explain how you overcame your obstacles. You let her know that obstacles will show up in her path as well but never let her forget you will hold her hand through it all.

8. You're her protector.

Your inner mom comes out when she talks about the cute boy in her second grade math class. When she gets in a fight with your parents she runs in to your arms seeking for you to wipe her tears. She comes to you with her life problems waiting for your advice and all you want to do is wrap your arms around her and beg for the pain to hit you and not her.

9. She is always welcome wherever you are.

There will come a day where you both no longer live together and that day will break her heart just as much as it will yours. Never let her forget that she has a home where you are and the best thing about having a sister is the never ending sleepovers.

10. You have a best friend, forever.

You and your best friend from high school may think you have this unbreakable bond but nothing comes close to what you and your sister have. She is always there for you, time will only bring you guys closer together. She is always going to pick up when you call, hold your hand as you cry, rub your back when you get sick and be there to share your big news with. You are her everything, don't you ever forget that.

To my sister:

Don't ever forget that I am always rooting for you and I will love you, forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
