10 Things You Learn From Being A Rho Gamma

10 Things You Learn From Being A Rho Gamma

This year, I got the opportunity to be a recruitment counselor, or Rho Gamma, for my school's sorority recruitment. This was a new experience that benefited me in so many ways. Being a Rho Gamma thought me many things this past week.

1. Other chapters aren't actually that bad

Each chapter has stereotypes for the other chapters on campus and I came to find that many of them at my school weren't true. I learned that I actually love the girls in other chapters and I loved the chapter house I stayed at for the week of recruitment.

2. PNMs are the cutest

When you first see the potential new members (PNMs) you freak out inside because it is so exciting that they could be your new sisters. The PNMs are very cute because most are freshman and nervous about recruitment. I loved getting to meet so many new girls.

3. Being a Rho Gamma is hard

Being a Rho Gamma is so much harder than I thought it would be. I thought one week away from my sisters wouldn't be that bad, but it was so hard disaffiliating from them. I loved doing it, but by the end of the week, I was so ready to be home.

4. It's easy to get lost in other chapter houses

When you live at a chapter house that isn't yours for a whole week, many things can happen, and one of those things is getting lost in the house. Finding your way around a new house and figuring out how they do things is more difficult than you think.

5. Keeping track of girls is tough

When you are a Rho Gamma, you have to keep track of many girls by taking them to and from the chapter houses. This is harder than it sounds since all of us are in college, but girls getting lost happened more than you would think.

6. Other Rho Gammas are super cool

Bonding with the other Rho Gammas was one of my favorite parts of work week and recruitment week. I got close to girls from other chapters that I barely knew before being a Rho Gamma.

7. Food is better at other chapter houses

In my personal experience, I thought the food at the chapter house I stayed at during the week was bomb. Everyone asked me how it was staying at a different house and I always replied with the food was better than ours. Haha!

8. Thinking on your feet is an essential

When you are helping girls find the right sorority for them and dissafiliating from your own chapter, you really have to think on your feet. A PNM might ask you a question that throws you off guard and you have to come up with an appropriate answer. I learned how to think on my feet very fast during recruitment week.

9. Appreciate your home

When you live in a different chapter house for a whole week and are away from your sisters, you really come to appreciate your own chapter in ways you never thought possible. I missed my home so much by the end of the week. Each chapter house has a different vibe and you come to miss the vibe from your own house.

10. Being a Rho Gamma is so rewarding

The main thing I learned over recruitment week was that being a Rho Gamma is so rewarding. Helping girls find their home in a sorority is one of the best feelings because they start to love it as much as you do. When I watched the girls from my Rho Gamma group run to their homes on Bid Night, I was so overjoyed. This is definitely something every sorority girl should experience.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
