10 Things To Do Instead Of Studying
The Ithacan

It's finals week and no one wants to study. So instead of studying, I came up with 10 things I'd rather do than study, which are also effective procrastination tools. You may be a pro-procrastinator already, but maybe there's something here you haven't thought of. Here's 10 things you can do instead of studying:

10. Check Facebook/social media

This is probably how you found this article anyway! Facebook can provide a pretty solid distraction and is a very effective tool for procrastination.

9. Learn how to play an instrument.

There's a practice piano in the basement of your dorm, and your study music is inspiring you! Go find a youtube video and learn how to play!

8. Go to the bathroom.

This could kill a few minutes and at least break your concentration, even though you don't have to go. You could read in there, but nah.

7. Take a shower.

You're already in the bathroom, may as well shower. It'll easily kill 20-30 minutes if you just stand in the shower. Everyone likes a good hot shower when they're stressed.

6. Read an article.

Like this one for example, because you're probably procrastinating as you read this anyway.

5. Write an article.

I should definitely be studying right now, but instead I took a few minutes to write this article, so I could help you not study, too. Yay!

4. Take a nap

You could probably use some sleep after the multiple all-nighters that you either have or are about to pull.

3. Call your parents.

Me: Hi Mom.

Mom: You should be studying. Why are you calling me? *hangs up*

Me: Thanks Mom.

2. Stress about something else.

You have plenty of things to worry about besides finals! What are you going to do with the rest of your life? Where are you going to work this summer? How are you going to get everything from your room back home? How are you going to get your futon out of your room?

1. Play video games/watch Netflix.

This is perhaps the most time consuming of all means of procrastination. Catch up on a show, replay an old game, start a new one. Hello nine seasons of "The Office," goodbye 4.0.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
