Being 14 and a freshmen in high school is probably one of the worst years ever. Of course if I knew what I knew now freshmen year would be so much easier! Here's 10 things I wish I knew four years ago.
1. You're going to be okay
You've survived 100% of your worst days. I promise you whatever it is that's making you think the world is falling apart will go away. The clouds will part and the sun will shine again. Tough times make you tough. I promise you're going to be just fine.
2. Stop caring about what everyone else thinks about you
You will waste more time trying to please others than reaping the benefits. Nobody's opinion but your owns matters. This is a lesson that will take you a long time to learn but if you don't learn it in high school, life will be tough. Put yourself first. People will like you as long as you like yourself.
3. You're beautiful just the way you are
Yes that song by Bruno Mars is totally right, you are beautiful just the way you are. You don't need to change for anyone. Don't compare yourself either. You don't need pounds of makeup, hair extensions or fake nails. Your beauty is more than what is on the outside.
4. That boy you "love" is not worth your tears
He's temporary, he's not the love of your life, he's not the one. The fun is over, time to move on. Do your squats, wear red lipstick and don't let boys ruin your mascara. Someday you'll find the man you'll spend the rest of your life with but for now just enjoy high school and live life to the fullest while you can.
5. It's okay to ask for help
There is nothing wrong with asking for help. Asking for help does not show weakness, in fact it shows you are strong enough to admit your weakness and that you want to improve. So go ahead and ask for a tutor, ask to see a counselor. Don't be ashamed.
6. Do your homework and study. Seriously.
You need good grades! You need a good GPA! This will not only help with getting accepted into college but affording it, because in order to get scholarships you gotta have those good grades! Don't procrastinate either. Start those good habits now so when you get to college you can continue to get good grades.
7. Appreciate your family.
They will always have your back and love you unconditionally. You may get annoyed and think their dumb but soon you'll be calling your dad just to tell him about your day or calling your mom because your sick and need her. Tell them you love them; it'll mean more to them than you could ever know.
8. Put your true friends first.
True friends are like precious gems: hard to find but treasured so much. These friends are so important, they'll know you're upset before you even realize it yourself. They'll be there to pick you up when you've fallen down, they'll be there to celebrate all the amazing things too. High school is so much easier when you have someone who cares about you next to you. Don't let them go. I've learned you can lose a person so unexpectedly, let them know you love them before it's too late.
9. Don't be afraid
Face your fears. Fear holds you down and honey you don't have time for that! Life is so much more fun when you experience everything you can and have no regrets! You're only this young once, don't let a fear hold you back from a once and a lifetime experience.
