There are a lot of different types of relationships in this world. Friends, significant others, friends with benefits, I really could go on for years. But I think one of the most unique relationships in the world is the one you have with your roommate.
Personally, I’ve lucked out and had the same wonderful roommate for the past three years. But whether you’ve had the same roommate for 10 years or this is your first year living together, there are just certain things that only roommates understand. So here’s just a short list of the things we forget to thank them for.
- For being understanding and empathetic when I have the annual week-long plague of a cold, when I spend half the night blowing my nose and the other half hacking up a lung. Thanks for losing sleep with me on that one bud.
- For politely leaving the room when you need to have a break-down-crying phone call with your mom. Because those also seem to happen at least once a year.
- For all the late-night pillow talk sessions. Should you have probably been sleeping the night before your big psych exam? Sure! But roommate pillow talk is always too good to pass up.
- For going along with all my stupid ideas. For example, going to get a donut at 1 a.m. on a Wednesday.
- For doubling my wardrobe. Let’s be real, you get more compliments on your roommate's clothes than your own.
- For answering life’s really tough questions like “can I go another day without showering?” or “is it normal for ______?"
- For giving me a second family. Because there’s really nothing more fun than chatting with your roommate's mom, FaceTiming her dog, or Skyping her boyfriend with her.
- For helping me find my words when I need it most, like when I'm trying to sound super cool and normal while texting that cute guy from your psych class.
- For introducing me to new things. Whether it be that weird cereal they always ate in high school, or a cool new song, they’re always showing you what’s hip and happenin’.
- For giving me memories to last a lifetime.
