We made it.
(It's really only been one. But it feels like it's been longer)
2016 has been a struggle; we lost people along the way. Some bad things happened. There are some things a lot of us are probably going to regret. But whatever's happened, we made it. It's finally here.
The promised land. The light at the end of the tunnel. 2017.
Here are some things we're all probably going to do this year:
1. Write 2016 as the date on things
We all struggle with this ever year, actually. It took me until September this year not to have to change the five in 2015 into a deformed six on everything I wrote.
(On that note, I have no idea how I'm going to change the six in 2016 into a deformed seven. Anyone with ideas can contact me ASAP)
2. Burn our 2016 calendars
Send them back to hell where they belong.
3. Make New Years' resolutions
This is a time-honored tradition: popular resolutions include losing weight, working out more, eating better, and just generally getting your life together.
And, subsequently:
4. Not follow through with our New Years' resolutions
There are a lucky few that will get their lives together in 2017, but I doubt it will be because of their New Years' resolution.
5. Talk about how bad 2016 was
Eventually, if we talk about it enough, it'll only feel like a distant memory. Maybe.
On a much happier, more optimistic note:
6. Work harder-
The fact that this year ended the way it did will only inspire us to do more.
7. -and fight harder
It doesn't matter if they don't want to listen to what we say. We'll make them.
Even so-
8. Care more for people
We will take better care of each other. We will be more considerate of each others' feelings--call it political correctness if you like, but concern for others' feelings is never wrong.
9. Move on
Maybe 2016 was bad, and maybe we'll be talking about how bad it was this time next year, but we will not let it stop us from making our lives better in 2017.
10. Be better
It doesn't matter who you were in 2016. It doesn't matter if you regret something you did, or if there's a loss that you mourn, or if you feel despondent or apathetic. It's not too late to change things. It's not too late to be the person you want to be.
Maybe this is just another New Years' resolution I won't follow through with. But 2017 can be our year, if we're willing to work for it.
