10 Things Every Jimmy John's Employee Wants You to Know

It’s no secret that working in the food service industry comes with its share of challenges and frustrations. As a delivery driver for Jimmy John’s, I have encountered my fair share of…difficult…customers. That being said, there are a handful of questions that we are asked on a daily basis, as well as mix-ups that have occurred on more than one occasion simply because some customers are not familiar with the lingo and inner workings of Jimmy John’s. To save both customers and employees valuable time and confusion in the future, I have created a list of 10 things that we Jimmy John’s workers wish all customers knew:

1. If you don't want mayo on a sandwich that comes with mayo, please say so right away. We are trying to make your sandwiches as quickly as possible, we start assembling them from the minute you order. It breaks our hearts a little bit every time we have to throw away a perfectly sliced and mayo-ed piece of bread because you waited until the end of your order to mention you don't want mayo.

2. We're not a Subway-don't try to look through the glass, our table isn't set up that way and we'll probably be making your sandwich too quickly for you to follow, anyway.

3. We don't have salt and pepper. Sorry, but our bread is too good to spoil with salt and pepper. If you REALLY need to add something, we do have oregano that we can throw on there.

4. The napkins are right behind the counter. Behind the counter. Detrás de la boutner. Derrière le comptoir. Behind the counter.

5. Tip your driver well, they remember what locations tip and which ones don't. A $3 or $4 tip will make your driver's day and it is a small price to pay to get sandwiches within minutes without ever having to change out of your pajamas.

6. All sandwiches come on 8 inch French bread. Period. You are welcome to request wheat bread or an unwich (lettuce wrap), but you do not have to say french bread every time you order a sandwich, I promise.

7. Jimmy John's sets the delivery area. You don't set the delivery area. I understand you only live a few miles away, but our delivery radius is about 1.5 miles, that's how we keep our deliveries so fast. Don't try to argue with the employee on the phone about how you should be in the delivery area.

8. If you do live outside the area and you really really want those sandwiches delivered to the door, your best bet is to offer up a substantial tip for the driver. A little sweet talking can go a long way.

9. Your avocado is spread deliciously onto the cheese slices on your sandwich. Please don't complain that we didn't put the avocado on your sandwich until you've checked the cheese, because I guarantee 9 out of 10 times that you will find your avocado spread.

10. All of our slims are just that-- a slim. It's fresh baked bread and deli sliced meat for the perfect combination, and you cannot, I repeat, cannot add any vegetables or mayo to the slims. It's meant to be sweet and simple, and if you need a little something extra you can ask for mayo or mustard packets on the side. However, if you really need lettuce or tomato on your sandwich, you will have to upgrade to subs 1-6.

This Jimmy John's run-down should go a long way in making sure you have the best sandwich experience possible. Not having to answer the same questions over and over will make the employees happy, and thus ensure they make your sandwich with love and top quality. Everybody wins!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
