Growing up I was always the girl playing in the dirt, going fishing with my brother and his friends, and spending more time playing barefoot running around than with barbies. Being a 'tomboy' was never a bad thing to me. I always had fun, I always had great friends to be around, and I rarely worried about drama. Of course I still had my girl friends to play dress up with (let's face it, what girl didn't?), but throughout the majority of my life, my guy friends have always been the best ones. Over the years, I've learned some things about having these guy best friends.
1. Having guy best friends means getting picked on. Nonstop.
Being the girl of the group means you can't go a day without getting made fun of or being the butt of a bad joke. It's all out of love, but they do get a little hostile from time to time. You learn to have thick skin and a crazy sense of humor while being with guys constantly, and it honestly makes life so much funnier.
2. You automatically have more overprotective older brothers.
It's almost surprising to see my guy friends get protective over me when something happens. Whether it be boy problems or someone just being mean to me, they're so quick to step up and threaten to do something absurd. Although surprising, it's hilarious and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
3. Wearing makeup and dressing up doesn't matter.
When you're constantly around guys who don't know the difference between lengths of sleeves and what specific pieces of makeup are called, there's zero stress to dress up and make yourself pretty everyday. They like me if my hair's a mess and I have no makeup on just as much as they do when I take the time and put in the effort to look presentable.
4. No one judges you for how much you eat.
The guys I'm friends with judge me for not eating a ridiculous amount and know me well enough to not judge me for my strange food choices. If I want to eat an entire box of cosmic brownies, they don't think twice of it. If I want an entire box of pizza? They try to steal a piece, but don't question me for eating it.
5. Inappropriate jokes are a daily occurrence.
The sense of humor required for being friends with guys is one you acquire over time, but no one else really understands it. You learn to just laugh and tune out half of the conversations you hear.
6. Any guy that you start seeing has a hard time adjusting to how close you are to them.
No normal guy is usually comfortable with a girl they're interested in being best friends with a group of guys and seeing them everyday. They learn to accept the weird friendships you have, though, and if they don't, they can say goodbye.
7. You're automatically dubbed the mom of the group.
From teaching them how to do the dishes and laundry to giving them advice on anything, you take care of them and protect them. Especially being in college, your group of friends quickly becomes your family and the roles are assigned. It's a hard job being the mom of the group, especially when the guys you're around make you want to pull your hair out multiple times a day, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
8. They always have your best interest at heart.
No matter how much the guys mess with me or publicly embarrass me, I know they'd never intentionally do something to hurt or upset me. At the end of the day, I know they'd go out of their way to make sure I'm okay and take care of me.
9. You'll always have someone to drag on ridiculous adventures.
It's midnight and you want to go look at how pretty the stars are? Guilt one of your friends into it. Girls would complain about needing their sleep, but guys just quit arguing after a while and go with your crazy ideas.
10. You love each and every one of them a ridiculous amount, no matter how annoying they are.
The guys I'm friends with are some of my favorite people in the world and I'd do anything for them, and they know it. No matter how many bad jokes they make, how much they make fun of me, or how frustrated I get with telling them not to mix colors and whites in the laundry, they mean the world to me.
