10 Things I Wish I Had Known Before Coming To College

No one can paint an exact picture of what your college experience will be like, for everyone's is unique to themselves. But, as I quickly learned, anything helps. So, here is a list of ten things I wish someone had told me before I left for school.

1. Have fun, but remember to study

Going to parties and fun nights out with friends are perfect in college, but don't forget to save time for your studies as well. Even 30 minutes can go a long way, and you'll be glad you did come Finals Week.

2. Cramming does not work

When you picture college life, you probably picture someone chugging an energy drink at 4 am with a stack of books beside them, cramming for the next day's test. While this is a common practice, do not be fooled. Cramming does not work, folks! Study a couple of days before the test and get plenty of sleep; you're much more likely to pass the test!

3. Get plenty of sleep, even if you have to nap between classes

Sleep helps your brain recover and process what it has taken in throughout the day. Do not deprive yourself of it. Get as much as you can, even if you have to take a nap in the library or in a nearby chair.

4. READ THE SYLLABUS

There is a reason your instructors provide a syllabus on the first day of class. Read it. Print it out. Sleep with it under your pillow. Do whatever you have to do to make sure you read this important document.

5. Take advantage of the rare gem that is extra credit

Not all instructors will offer extra credit, but when they do, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Even if you have a good grade in the class, getting a few extra points will give you a bigger safety net for test grades.

6. Call home, you will miss it

Remember to call home. Independence can be exciting, but you will still miss your family and they will miss you. Give them a call, it's okay to miss them.

7. Go to class

Remember that you are still here to be a student. Even though that 8 am class seems so easy to dismiss and sleep right through, push yourself to get up and go. You will understand the material so much better if you sit through lectures. Also, most classes grade on attendance, so if you do skip, do it wisely.

8. Make friends with your roommates

Whether you like it or not, these will be the people you live with for the entire school year, so try to be friendly and get along with one another. Who knows, the two of you may have a lot in common and end up becoming very good friends.

9. Remember to drink plenty of water

Energy drinks, coffee, and the occasional protein shake are not enough for your body. Walking to class in the heat can take its toll on you as well, so just remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

10. Don't be afraid to meet new people

Lastly, college campuses can be very big and full of many different people. If you're anything like me, you might keep to yourself and avoid introducing yourself to people. Don't be shy, put yourself out there and make some new friends!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
