1. Refusing to talk to me.
If I ask how your day is going, the least you can do is give me a response. I am a human being too and I am probably bored to death by standing behind a cash register all day.
2. Yelling at me.
I am very sorry that the line is long, we are out of the item you want, or your coupon expired. I have literally no control over the inner workings of the store. By yelling at me you are not going to get your way and you will probably ruin my day.
3. Saying “It must be free” when something does not scan.
Yeah, I have never heard that one before…
4. Telling me your opinion on debatable issues.
I am sure that as a student at UCLA you have a very well thought out opinion on Ferguson, Syria, Affirmative Action, etc. but when there are ten people behind you in line, I really do not have the time to listen to you tell me all about it.
5. Talking on the phone while at the register.
It is really rude when you cannot take the two minutes to check out without being on the phone. Since you are on the phone, chances are you are not listening to me or paying attention, which means you are making the process take longer. And most of all, DO NOT hold up your finger and shush me. If you needed complete silence you should not have chosen to take the phone call while at the grocery store.
6. Take forever to walk away from the register.
Please do not try to organize your life while still standing in front of my register. Just pick you stuff up, move over a couple feet, and then put it in your bag. You are not the only customer in the store.
7. Flirt with me.
It is so uncomfortable to get hit on at your place of work. Even if I find you attractive I would feel very uncomfortable giving you my number with my boss standing next to me. And if I do not find you attractive that is even worse because I am forced to stand there and listen to you while being kind and courteous in response. It is a lose lose situation all around.
8. Run off to get that thing you forgot.
Please, please do not hold up the line for another five minutes while you go find something you forgot. It is rude to me and the other customers. And chances are the next customer will complain to me about it.
9. Put your money on the counter when my hand is clearly out.
It just feels rude that you do not have decency to put your change in my hand. I know it is fun watching me try to pick up all your pennies off the counter but please try to resist the urge.
10. Give me “dirty” money.
By this I mean money that came from an awkward place such as your bra or your shoe. I do not want to touch money that has just touched your breasts. I also do not appreciate it when customers give me mysteriously wet money. If you are going to give me wet money at least explain to me why it is wet so I do not have to wonder what the mysterious wetness is from.
