10 Signs You Grew Up At The Lake
Lauren McKevitt

Finals are finished, grades are in, and the sun is staying out a lot longer. It’s finally summertime, the best time of the year. For us college kids, this means time to catch up with friends, relax with no homework, and to get back home. For us kids who grew up at our cottages, cabins, or lake houses, this means three months full of more memories on the lake. Here are 10 things that those of us who grew up at the lake each summer can relate to.

1. You never complain about the drive

Whether the ride be a half hour, two, or more than five, the trip is always worth it. With a stacked soundtrack and car full of family or friends, your destination feels like it's just down the road.

2. Your go-to restaurant, bakery, or coffee shop is waiting

All you've had a taste for was your cozy little shop. The waitresses are always charming and if you're lucky, they have your order memorized. Iced hazelnut coffee with a shot of coconut syrup, I'm coming for you.

3. You talk too much smack when tubing

"You're not going to get me off." A phrase I've regretted every time. If you talk any smack before getting on that tube, your driver will make sure when you get off the tube you'll not only fall off but face plant, cartwheel, or hit your buddies in the air. Just hold on for dear life.

4. Your friends complain about you never being home

The lake is most likely your favorite place in the world; it's your getaway. And although you don't want to miss out on things at home, your friends should understand that you may have family time planned or no ride back. If they need a little help understanding, invite them up and plan a weekend getaway.

5. Water sports are your only workout

As fun as running can be, you can move a whole lot faster being towed by a boat. Whether it be kayaking, skiing, wakeboarding, or knee boarding in the sun, your workout for the day is a lot more fun than anything at the gym.

6. It doesn’t matter how many fish you catch

Maybe your grandfather taught you to fish, or your first time fishing was with friends. Either way, you are sure to have great memories and conversations will waiting for the fish to bite.

7. You never (rarely) forget sunscreen

You will never forget that time you had second degree burns all over your body. Since then, you try to never forget sunscreen because you know that while surrounded by water at all sides on a boat, you are guaranteed to get lots of color. Your choice is whether to be golden brown or tomato red.

8. You have your favorite spot on the lake

That calm side of the lake where the sun shines the best and the water is perfectly still for skiing. Anytime you pass this spot, you cant wait to throw your anchors down or get ready to ski.

9. You learned how to drive a boat far before a car

The first thing on your list as you grew up was to learn how to drive the boat before the thought of driving a car on your 16th birthday. Yeah, maybe you never have got your official license, but you can probably drive any type of boat far better than a car.

10. You never want the summer to end

Each summer you create memories that you will cherish forever and can expand on next time summer rolls around. But for now, soak up the sun and never take your time at the lake for granted.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
