Being a tour guide is one of the most awesome on campus things that any student can get involved in. However, it does come with its own set of unique struggles, perks, and ways of life. Though some details vary from campus to campus, there are a few things that every tour guide knows about and lives with.
1. You definitely have your "tour guide voice."
Louder, probably higher pitched as well. You know it makes you sound fake, but you don't care.
2. Getting a paycheck from your school is pretty awesome.
Seeing that in your direct deposit is somehow more satisfying than any other paycheck you get.
3. It's not a "dorm," it's a "residence hall."
You always have to use the technical terminology with prospective students and families
4. You know a lot of random facts about your school.
You could just be casually on a walk with friends and you'll start spouting off facts about wherever you are until you realize that you, in fact, are not giving a tour right now.
5. Weather can be your worst enemy.
Rain, snow, hail, floods, etc. You give tours through it all.
6. Weather can also be your best friend.
You also get to be outside on wonderful sunny days
7. You value shoes based on how comfortable they are to walk long distances in.
Tours are usually at least an hour long, and that's all walking and standing. Best be prepared.
8. You never have trouble meeting your step goal for the day.
All that walking makes your Fitbit happy.
9. You have plenty of ways of delicately answering parental questions.
You have a perfectly scripted, reasonable answer for every question about drinking, parties, campus safety, and all those other parental concerns.
10. You get to help people love your school as much as you do, and that's pretty awesome.
You know that a good tour and a bad tour is what could make the difference for an undecided student.
