When I was in elementary school, I loved Valentine's Day. It was the day when all of my classmates would bring in goodies that had a piece of candy attached to a little tag. Besides, from the "To: Your Name, From: Your Classmate's Name," the tags expressed cheesy Valentine's Day-themed play-on-words. It was nice to know that these 18 to 20 students in your class cared about you on Valentine's Day.
Don't get me wrong, I still love Valentine's Day. But over the years, the definition I have for Valentine's Day slightly changed. Nowadays, I think of Valentine's Day to be the one day of the year to say "I love you" excessively, and it is the day in which single people drown their sorrows in chocolate and flowers they buy for themselves. You may think to be single on Valentine's Day isn't so bad, but otherwise, these are the struggles.
1. You have to say "I love you" to yourself.
Who better to advise you to do so than Justin Bieber, "You should go and love yourself."
2. You have to send flowers to yourself.
Even though flowers can sometimes be annoying, especially if you have allergies, you can't help but wish someone would send you a colorful bouquet.
3. You see a picture on Instagram or Facebook of your ex with someone else on Valentine's Day.
You ponder what this "someone else" has that you don't have.
4. You are the "Ebenezer Scrooge" of Valentine's Day.
Let's be real here, you are basically hating on Valentine's Day, unless you are in a relationship, or you actually like Valentine's Day.
5. You have a temptation to cringe every time you see a couple.
I'm sorry, but I really don't want to see any PDA right now.
6. You have to buy chocolate for yourself.
Calories don't count on Valentine's Day, right?
7. You have to watch sappy romantic movies by yourself.
Sadly, that empty space next to you on the couch will not be occupied by anyone. Who will wipe away the tears you will shed while you watch Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in "The Titanic"? Who will wipe away the tears you will shed while you watch "The Notebook"?
8. You tell people that your pet will be your valentine.
"At least, my dog will always love me. The love is mutual."
9. You listen to your non-single friends talk about their plans for Valentine's Day.
You are happy for your non-single friends because the plans they have for Valentine's Day make them happy, but deep down inside, you are jealous of them.
10. The lame memes on Tumblr and shirts about people and food being in a relationship describe your love life.
*Looks at a shirt that says "All I Care About Is Pizza" on it...*
Happy Valentine's Day!
