10 Struggles Of A Retail Worker

Behind the "how are you doing today?"

Retail Bus Tips

As any job, retail work has its highs and lows. It may seem easy peasy, but underneath all the glitz and glam in making people look their best, there is hard work that is done. We don't just stand there all day and ask how your day is going, we do a lot more that. If you're a worker in the retail world, you know EXACTLY what these struggles are. (Not in any particular order either)

1. Tagging Guns

Okay, so using them is pretty cool. I pretty much feel like I have some kind of super power while handling one, but what's not cool is when you get poked by one. For those of you who don't know, tagging guns are extremely sharp. Poke yourself hard enough with one, you might end up with a trip to the ER for stitches.

2. Closing by Yourself

This isn't SO bad, but when you're the only one in your department, especially if you work in a pretty big department store, closing can be pretty tough. Not so much on weekdays, but weekends? Be prepared, my friend. Good luck fixing every table, rack, and shelf, oh and doing dressing rooms at the same time. Oh yeah, and register.

3. EXTREMELY Messy Dressing Rooms

I know all of us have at least been in a dressing room once in their life, and most of us try stuff on every time we shop. But what kills me is when someone tries on 15 pairs of pants in the same size and brand. And then they leave them inside out and wrinkled up in the floor. Who's gonna want to buy them now?

4. Recovery. Again. And AGAIN.

...and again, and again, and again. OH WAIT I THINK IT STILL LOOKS GOOD... oh. no. That one shirt I folded 5 seconds ago, and then 5 seconds before that, and 5 seconds before that... yeah that one... it needs to be folded again.

5. Rude Customers

I promise everyone, we are human beings TOO. If you wouldn't want someone to talk to you they way you talk to us, then don't approach it that way. We really are here to help you with anything you need and are happy to answer any questions you have. But please, please, please, do not scream at us. We are only doing what we have been told to do and if something is against our policy, we really do not have any control over it. Just because you're having a bad day, does not mean you get to take it out on us when all we are simply doing is trying to help you.

6. Finding Random Things in Your Department

I can't tell you how many times I've found food or soda cups in my department. We do have trashcans in the store, and if you would like to throw something away we would be happy to do it for you. Not a day goes by that I find different things in my department that don't belong there. Like, towels on top of leggings. Hmm... I didn't know towels could be leggings. Did you?

7. People Who Don't Read Signs

We have signs for you for almost every question you have, I promise.

8. Sizing EVERYTHING

Okay, this one isn't bad. But when you go through and size a whole section and then that one person comes by and rearranges everything, it's a little bit defeating.

9. Losing your name tag

That reminds me... where did I put mine last...?

10. Working Through Break on Accident

If you're not a watch person, this happens to you quite often. You're working and working and working and all of a sudden you get pretty exhausted and you wonder why. Oh, it's because you missed your break. An hour ago.

Although there are struggles, as there are in many jobs, being in retail is not as bad as it seems. I don't know about you, but my favorite part is the discount. Oh, and the occasional free food in the break room. AND you do get to meet some pretty cool people. They usually help the time go by faster and work more enjoyable.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
