As a left-handed individual, I find myself struggling with basic tasks daily. People always marvel at the fact that I am not right-handed, but trust me to all of you righties out there, you are privileged. For those of you who wonder why sometimes it sucks to be left-handed, here are some things we struggle with daily:
1. Scissors
Most scissors are only right-handed people friendly, and it's incredibly frustrating. All I want is to cut open the packet of cookie mix that I'm too weak to open on my own. Is that really too much to ask?
2. Writing
Yes, I am aware my writing is smudged. Yes, I am also aware it looks like my hand is blue because of my pen ink. I'm sorry, there's not much I can do about it.
3. Binders and Notebooks
It's incredibly frustrating having to constantly pull things out of a binder because you want to write on them. Oh, spiral notebooks tend to imprint our skin... and it hurts.
4. Gym class
I'm not sure about other lefties, but when I had the softball/baseball unit and the field hockey unit, it was a struggle. Luckily, I played softball for a few years so I had my own glove that wasn't disgusting and had to be shared with multiple lefties. However, field hockey was a straight up loss.
5. Desks
You know how you righties complain about those tiny right-handed desks? Well, imagine being left-handed and having to use on of those. Yeah, it sucks. We're lucky if there is a left-handed desk, but most of the time some righty takes it because they're bigger.
6. Whiteboards/Chalkboards
For the same reason why writing is a struggle. One time I walked around with chalk covering my entire arm all day. You learn to deal, but it sucks.
7. Doors
They're typically made for right-handed people, so when there's finally a left-handed one, we're thrown for a loop.
8. Computer Mice
They're all basically for right-handed people only, and now that I had to accommodate to the general population, using a lefty one would take some time to get used to.
9. Eating Next to a Righty
Bumping elbows instead of fists. It hurts, and you feel restricted to movement.
10. You're a Minority
People really like to point this out. However, lefties tend to be smarter, and more awesome. Plus we're unique and wear our ink tattoos on our hands proudly.
