Some parents do not understand the struggles that us college students have to go through every day. Being a college student is a struggle in itself but parents do not realize that. Most parents think we do not go through any struggles while away at college. So here are 10 struggles to get them to better understand what we go through during our college career.
1. Nap Time
Nap time is crucial to college students even if it's just a 20 minute nap. WE NEED IT!! Especially between classes because just sitting listening to a professor talk can wear us out. We debate on how long we should sleep and even then we oversleep which always happens. If we don't get a nap throughout the day, you will find one grouchy college student walking through campus. You will hear this often: "I didn't get my nap today so don't bother me"
2. "I'm a broke college student"
This is a struggle as well as an excuse. The struggle of being a broke college student is something that really does exist. We contemplate whether we want to buy the store brand or name brand at Walmart and most likely we will go for the store brand. We also struggle to either drive down the street to the store or just walk to save gas as well as money for a longer trip. When we are with our parents shopping, we use the excuse "I'm a broke college student" to get that new outfit or shoes we want. That excuse will always come in handy as long as we are in college and after college when we have to pay back loans.
3. Clothing Attire
At night we say that we are going to dress nice the next day and lay out what we are going to put on. When morning comes, we get up early and decide to just put on some sweatpants and a t-shirt because we just don't feel like putting on real clothes. You will see a college student putting on real clothes maybe once or twice a week but not every day. Dressing nice is just too much work when you live on campus and see the same people 24/7.
4. Late Nights
Having a huge workload can leave you up until three in the morning with an eight o'clock class. Most college students stay up late because procrastination sets in leaving tons of homework to be done. Being up late to get homework that is due the next day is no joke especially if it's a five page paper. You will struggle for hours trying to find an idea and once you do, you will have that paper done in the next two hours which is no better. Eventually the crazy workload will be done....at five o'clock in the morning.
5. KCC Food or Fast Food
The debate between KCC food and fast food is an easy and hard struggle. It's easy because most of us college students crave fast food because the KCC doesn't satisfy most of us. So we go to Chick Fil A or Chiptole to get that craving of "real food". It's hard because that's when "I'm a broke college student" comes into play knowing you cannot afford fast food. So that's when you have to settle for the KCC when you don't want to. Blah
6. Tiredness
College students will always be heard saying that we are tired every minute. As soon as we get up we are tired because we didn't get enough sleep the night before. Even when we do get enough sleep, we still are tired. College is like a job without getting paid. You work all day, come back to your dorm room and work some more. So basically being tired throughout the day is a normal thing for a college student.
7. Homework
I would say this is the worst struggle because there is so much homework to be done. Professors give you a huge workload in each class, but do not realize the stress that it can cause. We struggle each day to finish the workload at a decent time to get a good nights rest but that rarely happens. It's a struggle to keep yourself from procrastinating to do homework right away because one minute you say you're going to do it a certain time but then three hours pass and you still haven't done it.
8. Staying on campus on the weekend
This is a struggle because some students do not have cars on campus so they cannot go home or any other place to get off campus. At Bridgewater College there is not much to do on the weekend unless you are in a club/organization. You are either stuck in your dorm room or a friend's room watching movies or playing games. Being on campus every weekend can get very boring but there's really no other choice unless you go up the street to JMU. *hint hint* lol
9. WEPA Problems
A lot of students do not own their own printer so the WEPA comes in handy...well when it decides to work. The WEPA machine will work one minute and the next it will just stop working. So then you have to travel to another building for a WEPA machine and come to find out that one isn't working either. You go building to building and finally find one that works just fine. By that time you are so tired and irritated from walking to every building just to print one little piece of paper. The struggle of finding a operating WEPA machine is real.
10. Relaxation Time
A college student does not have much time to even relax because there is always something that needs to be done. The word "relaxation" does not exist in the dictionary for college students. So there's not much to say about this struggle because it doesn't exist.
