Earlier this week, I thought I was alone in my suite when I got into the shower and started belting out slightly flat versions of “You Are the Music in Me" and “Breaking Free” from High School Musical. When I got out, still singing (this time in falsetto opera versions of the tween favorites), I realized that I could hear someone moving around in my suitemate's room. And I’m pretty sure it was her boyfriend. Oops.
Still, even though I felt a little awkward when I ran into him later that day, I don’t regret my little concert. Singing in the shower can put you in a better mood, and that’s always worth it. Here are my recommendations for your next shower set list:
1. Any song from High School Musical
Admit it. These songs are catchy. I especially recommend “I Gotta Go My Own Way” from "High School Musical 2" — it will also give you emotional release. *weeps*
2. "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson
Also acceptable: “Behind these Hazel Eyes” or “Because of You.” These power ballads are hype, and afterward you’ll feel like you can conquer the world, wet hair and all.
3. "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid
Since you’re in the water already, this choice makes a special kind of sense. Plus, as my friend Jena pointed out, it will bring you straight back to your childhood shower-singing days. Ahh, those fish-shaped shampoos…
*Any Disney song is a brilliant choice. My other favorites include “Colors of the Wind” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.”
4. “Believe” by Cher
This one is especially prime if you’re a hardcore alto like me. You can power-belt it (and have fun doing a Cher impression).
5. “All I Ask of You” from The Phantom of the Opera
I also like to do my own a cappella rendition of the "Phantom" overture. Dum… dum dum dum dum dum…
6. "Toxic" by Britney Spears.
Give into the temptation. And then, the next thing you know — Oops! You did it again. You have a Britney song stuck in your head.
7. Titanium by David Guetta ft. Sia
Because of "Pitch Perfect," obviously.
8. "S.O.S." or another JoBros throwback.
This one is another nostalgic choice for me. Who doesn’t want to return to those says when you gazed into the eyes of those Jonas Brothers posters on your wall?
9. "Drag Me Down" by One Direction
A more recent boy band favorite, this song is great for hair flipping and that one drop and squat dance move that I can’t do.
10. "Halo" by Beyonce
Duh.
Seriously, sing in the shower. You know you want to.
