1. After the Disco - Broken Bells
Honestly, anything written or produced by Broken Bells is extremely good. This song is so catchy you'll learn every word by the end of the day. "After the Disco" combines pop, and funk together perfectly. Broken Bells is made up by Brian Burton, from Danger Mouse, and James Mercer from The Shins. My friend, Luke, played this song during a spring break trip to Florida two years ago, and I have been listening to them ever since.
2. Oh Me - Nirvana
Since freshmen year of high school, I have been a huge Nirvana fan, and this song just happens to be off of my favorite album, "MTV Unplugged in New York," a special live concert that only used acoustic instruments rather than electric. "Oh Me", however, was not written by Kurt Cobain, but still is one of the best tracks on the album in my opinion. The entire album is calming, and the harmonies are beautiful. If you need help focusing, listen to this album in its entirety.
3. Mother - Florence and the Machine
There is no question about it, Florence Welch has one of the most beautiful, and triumphant voices in the music industry. I first heard this song when she preformed it live this summer, and it has been one of my favorites ever since. It has an indie sound along with rock, and the combination is heavenly. When she preformed this piece, she was running all around the stage, spinning in circles and jumping. Her passion really showed and I can't help but think of that day whenever I hear this song.
4. Novocaine for the Soul - The Eels
This song was introduced to me by my ex boyfriend, so there was a period where I couldn't listen to it because of the painful memories associated with it. However, the song was too good for me to ignore for too long. To me, the song speaks about being happy even when you feel miserable, and how emotionally strenuous it can be on a broken soul. Even when the singing stops, i highly recommend listening to it until the very end, because the fade of the music just adds to the effect of the song.
5. Brain Damage - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd is one of my all time favorite bands. I grew up listening to them, and only a year ago, discovered my fathers vinyl copy of "Dark Side of the Moon." This just made me fall in love with the album all over again. Its a classic piece in rock and roll history, and is, quite frankly, my favorite Pink Floyd song, and that is saying a lot. The harmonies in this song gives me chills. When I die, I want to be buried with this song playing in the background.
6. Down in a Hole - Alice in Chains
My high school days were very 90's grunge filled, and some of that has definitely passed, however, this song is made for those days where you just want to feel sad. Its calming at the same time, which is unusual for Alice in Chains. It reaches deep into your soul and makes you contemplate life. its perfect for the days where you feel like you are "down in a hole."
7. I'm Amazed - My Morning Jacket
Another great song introduced to me by my friend Luke. I actually have a whole playlist dedicated to him and all of the amazing songs he's shown me on my Spotify. This song was shown to me during a very rough time during my life. All of my friends were leaving me and I felt as if I only had a few people and my dog to rely on. I would take him on walks in the chilly fall weather and just play this on repeat. Its a very relaxing but still upbeat song. Jim James has such a unique voice, and its even better in concert! I also highly recommend watching the American Dad episode featuring them as well.
8. Blue Jeans - Lana Del Rey
I know I know. Typical Lana song right? Yes, it is. If you know anything about me at all, you would know that I am a diehard Lana fan. I have a huge poster of her beautiful self hanging proudly on my wall. I was introduced to this song by my friend Lauren, and I made her replay it about 5 times the first time I heard it. I know its one of Lana's most popular songs, but it still reigns my favorite after five years. Lana Del Rey will be my queen for a long time.
9. King Kunta - Kendrick Lamar
Lana may be the queen, but Kendrick reins king. Kendrick Lamar is my all time favorite rapper because of the stories he tells in his songs. I am a huge fan of "good kid, m.A.A.d city," so when "To Pimp a Butterfly" came out, I knew it would be just as good. "King Kunta" was the first song I listened to off of his new album, and I'm happy it was. I guarantee that this will be one of the most catchy songs you will ever listen to.
10. Gold on the Ceiling - The Black Keys
If you like Broken Bells, you will probably like the Black Keys as well. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney make a heavenly duo. Back in senior year, a group of friends and I were driving around and this song came on and everybody knew the words and started singing along. Everything the Black Keys come out with is awesome and catchy, and I definitely think it is in the rock and roll category despite their minimal use of heavy electric instruments.
