Being an out of stater means that I did not grow up in the Buckeye state and was not aware of all the little things that make a Buckeye fan a true Buckeye. Here are 10 simple things I wish somebody would have told me.
1. It is THE Ohio State University
If you forget the THE somebody is sure to correct you, even if you are not in Ohio.
2. If somebody says O-H you have to say I-O.
It is rude to not participate in this simple gesture and take pride in the tradition.
3. Buckeyes are not just a nut.
Even though the mascot is the nut, there are candy buckeyes and buckeye versions of many foods.
4. Wear Scarlet and gray on game day.
Even if you are not going to the game, you have to wear OSU colors to blend in.
5. 18th Avenue Library is called SEL.
Even though the library has officially changed its name from Science and Engineering Library to 18th Avenue Library, the nickname SEL is still extremely popular.
6. The Oval is nicknamed Oval Beach.
As soon as the sun is out, you can almost guarantee you will see people sunbathing on the Oval,
7. Don’t mention that Team Up North.
If you do its *ichigan, DO NOT include the M.
8. The 11th floor of Thompson has the best view on campus.
This is a hidden gem on campus. Not only is the view impeccable but the quietness makes it a great place to study.
9. The heart of buckeyes is in the Shoe.
The nickname of Ohio Stadium is the Shoe since it resembles a horseshoe and it is the heart and soul of buckeye football.
10. Nothing sweeter than singing Carmen Ohio.
Carmen Ohio is the school song that has the power to unite every buckeye through the heartfelt lyrics.
The Ohio State University is full of traditions but these are the ones that I wish I would have known before I started at OSU.
