10 Signs You Work with Children in the Summer

Whether it's summer camp, day care, nannying or any other job that takes care of tiny humans, you've had these experiences.

10 Signs You Work with Children in the Summer

1. You talk about the kids like you are their actual parent.

People who don't know you very well assume you are a parent because you recklessly throw the words "one of my kids" around. You know that you're referring to the children you work with, but the world does not. ("Today while one of my kids got in to a fight with another kid....oh! no! gosh, no! I don't have kids! The kids I work with!")

2. When you see anybody below the age of 10, you automatically smile and wave at them.

It doesn't matter if you're at the mall, a football game, or the grocery store...if there is a child there, you want to say hi. This sometimes results in said child giving you a confused look and walking away with thoughts of stranger danger in their head...but you just can't help yourself. It's even better when they return your smile.

3. Reunions are your favorite

When you see one of your favorite kiddos somewhere after the summer has ended, it’s like you have found your long lost child. Of course, hugs, pictures, and many questions about their school year, their teacher, and their friends follow.

4. You have awkward tan lines from being outside in your STAFF t-shirt every single day.

You're extra lucky if you have to take the kids swimming, and are required to wear a one piece swimming suit, or a t-shirt in the water.

5. You catch yourself using your “teacher” voice when your friends aren't listening to you.

6. You have a list of outrageous comments that your kiddos said to you.

This is the best part of working with children. "When you take communion, are you actually eating the body of Christ?"

7. Your room is full of coloring pages the kids made just for you.

Most of them half colored, with misspelled words. The worse the spelling, the cuter the pictures seem to get. Obviously you don't have the heart to throw their creations away...ever.

8. Sometimes that one "problem child" haunts your nightmares.

You know the one...The 4th grader who liked to say the f-word around your 1st graders, the one who ran away once a week, the one who liked to throw things at you, etc.

9. You have a special work bond with your co-workers...

...who shared many days of tantrums, tag, fights, swimming in ice cold water, time-outs, screaming, cleaning, and learning with you.

10. You're already counting down the days until next summer starts, and you can do it all over again.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
