After its launch a week ago, Pokemon Go has already become a prevalent nationwide phenomenon. This app, the 2016 recreation of the popular 90s game, was downloaded over one million times within the time period of the three days following its release. Not only has Nintendo’s stock raised by approximately 25%, but its market value has also increased by $17 billion. The app has driven both teenagers and adults alike wandering in the streets seeking to catch the characters of the game. And with so many individuals wandering around the streets staring at their phone screens, some crazy things have happened. Here are ten of the most ridiculous stories that have occurred within this past week.
1. The man who quit his job to play Pokemon Go full-time
"I wanted to have an adventure. I have been working for six years and I was desperate for a break. And Pokemon gave me the chance to live that dream." – Tom Currie
24-year-old Tom Currie from New Zealand quit his job so he could play Pokemon Go round-the-clock. In a great attempt to reach his goal of catching all 151 pokemon in the game, he started a two-month journey across New Zealand in order to do so. Thus far, Currie has traveled to six towns on the south island and has 20 bus trips booked. He has caught 90/151 pokemon so far, and is determined to continue until he reaches his target. This aspiration has caused him to stay up until 3 AM multiple times as he hunted for pokemon.
2. The man who got stabbed but continued playing and picked up a beer in the process
"I saw him go by and asked if he was playing Pokemon Go. He was like, 'What?' I guess he wanted to battle because he came up at me with a knife." – Michael Baker
Michael Baker, at 21 years old, was searching for Pokemon at 1 AM when he spotted another man in Forest Grove, Oregon. He approached the man, thinking he was another Pokemon Go player, but the man stabbed him in the shoulder. However, Baker did not go to the hospital following the attack because he wanted to continue playing Pokemon Go. He also stopped to buy beer and chips. When he did eventually go to the hospital, Baker had to get eight stitches to seam his injury.
3. The car crash that was caused by Pokemon Go
“This is an example of how easily accidents can occur when someone is engaged in the game and not paying attention. The accident investigation is ongoing.” – City of Auburn
While admittedly playing Pokemon Go, a driver crashed into a tree while driving. Thankfully, he did not end up being seriously injured.
4. The two men who fell down a 90-foot ocean cliff
“Stay clear of all buffs, overhangs, and cliffs.” – City of Encinitas

5. The guy who got caught cheating on his girlfriend
"She saw that I had caught a Pokemon while at my ex’s house. She found out last night at my house and hasn’t contacted me since then.” – Evan Scribner
In
Sunnyside, Queens, Evan Scribner’s girlfriend caught him in the act of cheating
after she retrieved his Pokemon Go app and noticed that he had fetched a
Pokemon in the exact location of his ex-girlfriend’s house. She showed up, saw
it with her own eyes, and dropped him like a hot potato.
6. The professional pokemon trainers
“I will walk around in 1-4 hour shifts signed in to your account capturing every single Pokemon I come into contact with, activating every Poke Stop I pass and walking nonstop to help hatch your eggs. I’ll even send you hourly updates while you’re at work/class/on a hot date informing you of any really exciting things I’ve come across for you.” – Ivy St. Ive, a journalist and Pokemon fan, on Craigslist
Pokemon trainers are creating Craigslist ads. They charge $20-30 per hour in NYC.
7. The two players who broke into a zoo to play near tiger
Two Pokemon Go players, whose mugshots
are pictured above, broke into their local zoo to catch pokemon late at night
and got arrested in Toledo, Ohio. The zoo banned this duo, but welcomes other
Pokemon Go players to come to the zoo with paid admission during their business
hours and snag pokemon.
8. Pokemon Go Strip Clubs

Pokemon can be found inside a variety of strip clubs. You can spot a pokestop and access it without going inside, but will likely have to pay a cover charge to go inside and catch a Pokemon.
9. Pokemon Go drivers
“Don’t want to walk especially in the heat, humidity, or rain for a bunch of km’s to hatch your eggs, visit Pokéstops, go to gyms, or get items? Looking for Pokémon the don’t reside where you do? Let’s make your Pokémon go experience more SAFE and comfortable? I am driving around the Tri-state area for Pokémon. I am open to all farm routes. I am available day and night!!!” – an ad in NY on craigslist
Entrepreneurs spotted this business opportunity, and have began businesses as personal Pokemon Go drivers, charging $20-25 per hour. Offered cities like Baltimore, Portland, and New York, these drivers offer to chauffer you around the streets to find pokemon. They often lure in customers by throwing in extras such as free snacks, phone chargers, and wifi.
10. The man who played Pokemon Go in his wife’s delivery room
Jonathan Teriot attended the
hospital with his wife and waited by her side for her C-section surgery. He
detected a Pidgey and was unable to resist the opportunity for making a great
catch as his wife lay on the hospital bed.
One thing is clear: we live in a world filled with some interesting people with some interesting priorities. I’m looking forward to hearing more of these ridiculous Pokemon Go stories, but can only hope that players of this game continue to do so with caution and awareness of their surroundings.
