For those reading this, do you like a love story? Do you enjoy watching or reading something that rips your heart right out of your chest? Do you like comedy? What about science fiction? I've got news for you if you like any of those, there's a TV show you can go watch that you'll positively adore. "Doctor Who!" (Warning: Watching this show will cause emotional distress and there is a real chance you may develop an addiction.) Here are 10 reasons you need to go and start watching Doctor Who right now.
1. Time Travel
Who doesn't want to take a look through time and see the past and future? Of course, being the nature of the show, some historical events will be just a little off due to the fact that there's a time traveling alien there. Aside from that major thing, the show stays very historically accurate.
2. Progressive
One of the first things I noticed when I first started watching this show, was the interracial relationships and homosexual relationships encouraged in the show. I didn't see them as bad things, but as things that are great for spreading a positive message about acceptance. "Doctor Who" has also challenged religious beliefs in several episodes. Not in a way that bashed religion, but by giving a scientific outlook to religion in those cases.
3. The Music
Murray Gold is the composer for almost 100 percent of the new series of "Doctor Who." The man is a musical genius. The music he writes is some of the most beautiful stuff I've ever listened to. It also has a way of truly capturing the moment of whats going on in the episode(s). If you don't believe me, go look up Vale Decem on YouTube.
4. Different Lead Characters
The basis of the show is that the Doctor changes throughout his travels. He literally changes his face if he has been injured to a point of nearly dying. To do this, obviously the directors have to change the actor who plays the Doctor. Every time the Doctor changes, it rips your heart out. My favorite Doctor is the 11th, but I cry every single time I watch the 10th change into the 11th.
5. Action
This show is not short on action. The Doctor is not a violent man, but he gets into plenty of fights. The Doctor actually opposes violence, and never carries a gun. There are, however, countless episodes where the Doctor and his companions find themselves getting into violent situations. The Doctor usually uses his words the get out of those situations, but sometimes he has to resort to other things. I'd tell you what, but why would I spoil it?
6. Love
There is a time in the show when the Doctor falls in love romantically with his companion. It makes a beautiful story. Other than that though, the Doctor shows unconditional love for his friends. There is even a point where one of his companions lied to his face and betrayed him in the most cold of ways. Even after that though, the Doctor looks at them when they realize the wrong they've done, and as they try to leave, he says "Do you really think I care for you so little?" Unconditional love.
7. Scientifically Accurate
Despite there being time travel in the show, it's actually very accurate scientifically. There are times when the Doctor has to do some math, and it's the right answers. There are things like referring to different dimensions that could be accurate. Also, there a times in the show when the Doctor actually gets to show off as a chemist and a physicist. Everything he says in those scenes is completely accurate.
8. Writing
Steven Moffat is the writer of this "Doctor Who" currently. Before him it was Russell T Davies. They are geniuses. The story lines they come up with are original and though provoking every single time. In fact, sometimes, so thought provoking that you wonder why you never thought of some things the way they portray them.
9. Positive Message
As I mentioned, Doctor Who teaches acceptance. I also mentioned that the Doctor isn't a violent person. The show teaches to accept and forgive others, no matter who they are or what they've done to you. The anti-war approach the show has is breathtaking. Go watch the Doctor's anti-war speech on YouTube. It's from the episode The Zygon Inversion. The episode came out around the time of the Paris attacks.
10. It Is So Beautiful
I can't say enough about this show. Seriously, I could make a list of 100 reasons to watch it. Do yourself a favor and go watch "Doctor Who." It is truly stunning.
So what are you waiting for? Every episode from 2005 until 2014 is on Netflix.
