College is the time where students find their “place" and are comfortable with it. Being on your own, away from your parents and being independent is a whole kind of new life once you get to college. However, there are many breaks in the academic school year where you get to go home. That is what us college students all dread. Why? Well, when you are home, you immediately want to return to school.
Being home means...
1. Seeing many people you do not actually want to see.
No one wants to go back home and see his or her ex. Being haunted by the memories of your ex or even ex friends in the hometown you grew up in isn't exactly what you want to be reminded of when home for breaks.
2. Living under the same roof as your parents.
Their house, their rules. That pretty much sums it up.
3. Being hammered to get a job for summer break.
Ok, say it again mom and dad, I know I need a job for summer break, let me enjoy the break that I have right now!
4. Being forced to go see your extended family.
Visiting each relative one by one and repeating yourself over and over again with the same stories you share from college.
5. Using your own money.
Since you aren't in another state, you can't take advantage of the credit card because it disappears once you step foot in your house. Therefore, you realize you are just a broke college student.
6. Being a taxi driver becomes your everyday life.
Oh! You're home from college, aka you can help me drive and pick up your siblings so I don't have to do it! Ummm not exactly my idea of what I wanted to do over break.
7. Curfew.
Although many people don't have it has strict as they used to, mommy and daddy still worry about their college kid and decide to give them a time to be home. Like ok, I don't think you realize I live on my own and come home at whatever hour I want.
8. Getting asked a million questions.
Since you will be with your family, in person, there is no way to avoid the questions that are asked. "How's school?" "What are your grades looking like?" "Do you have a boyfriend yet?"
9. The freshman 15 becomes VERY real.![]()
Now that you are showing your face and aren't hiding behind edited pictures, people do notice the weight gain since you left for college. Even if you aren't a freshman, I promise you it only gets more difficult from here.
10. Hearing all your friends talk about how their school is the best even though you know you attend the best school in the world.

Sure everyone says their school is the best school, but when you are constantly waiting to go back to your second home, you know you made the best decision for yourself.
Going home only makes you realize why you left home in the first place. But as amazing as it is to have a break from school work and getting to see family and friends, you slowly begin to miss Thirsty Thursdays with your friends, attending sports games while repping your school and most importantly, being on your own again with no rules but your own.
