So you have your "friends" you feel obligated to say hello to after you make awkward eye contact with them, and then you have your friends that physically tackle-hug you and send you unattractive Snapchats. These are very different levels of friendship; while you want to reduce the level of awkward in your acquaintanceships, you actively seek out new ways to make your best friends feel as uncomfortable as possible. Here are 10 reasons why you love these weirdos to death.
1. They’re your shopping conscience.
Should you buy that crop top? What about the Ben & Jerry’s? Maybe those shoes aren’t a good idea. You already have that shirt in another color – do you really need it? These are the questions of life (or more accurately, Target). How are you expected to make these decisions on your own? Your best friends are your voice of reason – embrace their advice.
2. You can tell them anything.
That really uncomfortable dream you had about your second cousin? You told your besties about it. The indigestion you suffered from that day-old-sushi? They know about it and definitely provided you with an example of their bodily functions, as well. The fact that you hooked up with an ex over the weekend? You chatted with them over brunch about it – and you can do SO much better.
3. They will tell you everything.
You hear “Never mind, I can’t say it” and know it’ll lead to “Oh, whatever, (insert gossip/weird fact here).” You can always count on your best friend to provide you with abnormal knowledge that you could certainly live without, but oddly enough enjoy listening to.
4. They crave the same things you do.
You know you’re besties when you have the “I could so go for Chipotle right now – feed me all the guac” conversation. You’re not ashamed to eat until you’re beyond content and compare the sizes of your food-babies. That, my friends, is true friendship.
5. They appreciate your quirks.
Maybe you love dad-jokes. Perhaps you’re a little too invested in "Grey’s Anatomy." It’s a possibility you’re a little OCD. Your best friends know the ins and outs of your lifestyle and they’re there to embrace it. They might even send a few puns your way, just because they know you’ll laugh a little too hard at them.
6. They know when to deliver the real talk.
Perhaps you’ve been a little overboard lately. Maybe you’ve been slacking on what needs to be done and splurging a little too much. Your besties are there to reign you back, to pull you into reality and talk that real talk. They’ll tell you how ridiculous you’ve been and bring you back to your normal level of (in)sanity.
7. They bend over backwards for you.
They’ll reach out to the uncle they don’t really talk to, so that you just might get a job at his company. They’ll pay for your PSL because they know you’ll cover for them at another point in time. They’ll comfort you when you’re crying on the couch because you just got dumped and they should be studying for an exam they have the next day. They care more about making sure you're okay before taking care of themselves.
8. Their parents feed you.
Their parents will visit. Their parents will offer to take you out to lunch/dinner. In the instance that you refuse, they will bring you leftovers. This is the essence of life. This is love, in edible form.
9. They accompany you in complaining about life.
Some days are a struggle from the start. After a long day of texting relatable emojis to your best friend group chat, you can come home and vent it out. They’ll tell you that you’re right, that your professor is downright evil and takes pleasure in seeing you fail. They’ll comfort you and make you feel like you’re doing life right. There's no other place where your complaints and struggles are best heard – especially when they break out the Pinot.
10. There are no greater people in this world.
We are humans. We physically and emotionally need social interaction. There’s no greater way to spend any given night than making memories with our favorite weirdos – those who accept the quirks that make us who we are and keep us from going legitimately insane.
