On April 24, 2016, Barbra Streisand turned 74. One of the best performers of our generation, Streisand is credited for her work as a singer, songwriter, actress and filmmaker. For this reason, she is among a small group of entertainers who can proudly refer to themselves as EGOTs (those who have earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award). In honor of her 74th, I have written a list of 10 things that make Barbra Streisand one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
1. She redefined the name Barbara.
At the ripe age of 19, Streisand kicked the "a" out of Barbara because she disliked the name. Her unique spelling of the name fits perfectly with her unique character.
2. She directed a film... and then starred in it!
In 1983, Streisand directed, co-wrote, co-produced and starred in "Yentl," which was based on the play of the same name. And to top it all off she even sings in the film. Play "Papa, Can You Hear Me" anytime you want the chills. Fun fact: Streisand was the first woman to win the award for Best Director at the Golden Globes for directing this film.
3. She did it again!
One of my favorite movies of all time... "A Mirror Has Two Faces." Want to know my thoughts on the film? See #8.
4. Her rendition of "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" will bring you to tears.
You will be forever changed after listening to this song. I dare you to listen to it without shedding a tear.
5. She's from Brooklyn.
Need I say more?
6. SNL created a skit in her honor
7. Her blazers give Hill a run for her money.
Just google "Barbra Streisand Blazer" and see what comes up. The woman coined that look -- she must have at least 50 in her closet.
8. She is familiar with Columbia's campus.
This is a bit esoteric, and I apologize for that, but it had to be said. Barbra Streisand was marching down college walk and pacing up and down the halls of Math before we arrived. For those of you who have not seen "A Mirror Has Two Faces," I need you to stop what you're doing immediately and go watch. I give you permission to finish this article later.
9. She is married to James Brolin.
Ugh they make such a beautiful couple. To be completely honest, I am not entirely familiar with Brolin's work. However it always puts a smile on my face to see a Hollywood couple who hasn't gotten divorced after five years.
10. She is gorgeous!
Despite the societal pressures, Babs did not ever get a nose job. As she says herself, growing up in Hollywood she was not considered "standardly pretty" (I would like to have a conversation with whoever told her that). However, that's what we love most about her -- her ability to embrace the flaws and flaunt them like a true boss. She is our gorgeous Babs and we love her dearly. (For those of you who disagree: when you belt out a note like she can, you can shake your head all you want. But until then, zip it).
Happy (belated) Birthday Babs, we love you!
