The day of my 20th birthday, I received a call from my parents welcoming me out of my teens into adulthood. Along with all the welcoming pats on the back, I heard this phrase said quite a bit throughout my day, "You're no longer considered a teen. You're an adult! You've survived teen pregnancy!" Although a funny, common phrase heard around campus as people move from the age of 19 to 20 without getting pregnant, something else was on my mind. I'm an adult...an ADULT.
Technically people say you've reached the age of being considered an adult at the age of 18, but it didn't hit me then as it did now. Two decades old, graduating from college in two years, hoping to have gained the knowledge and skills to get a real job, like a career. So I have to know what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I"M NOT READY FOR THAT! Not at all. Sometimes I wish I could go back to being a kid, when times were good and stress free. And here's 10 reasons why I think adults are still children at heart.
1. We still like to color.
Now they even have adult coloring books, just for us! All we need are our crayons and we are good to go. But never miss an opportunity to snag a cute puppy coloring book when you get the chance.
2. We take naps.
I, personally, feel like I take more naps as a college student than I did when I was in kindergarten. Life is so exhausting, it's so nice to just sleep for a good solid four hours. Yea, naps are nice.
3. We just want to have fun.
If college could be a couple months of education (because got to gain that knowledge) and a month of just hanging out on campus with friends with nothing to worry about, life would be pretty grand. Oh and we had no homework on the weekends. That would be good too.
4. We miss snack time.
I miss those times in kindergarten when the teacher would tell us it was snack time and then would fill our bowls with goldfish or pretzels. Or the times when it was your birthday and you would bring in cookies or cupcakes for the whole class to share, making you the boss of the class who brought everyone food. We should bring that back.
5. We ask our parents to do everything for us.
"Mom can you do my laundry? How do I file taxes? Can you make me a doctor's appointment? I don't want to do to financial aid; can you just call them for me? Can you send me some food? Can I drop out and just live at home forever?" Make sure to bat those eyelashes or compliment their beautifulness. Trust me, it helps.
6. We still watch Disney movies.
I have a huge collection of Disney movies that I watch all the time to cheer me up or just because it's Disney. I also get super excited when there is a new Disney or Pixar movie coming out, like Finding Dory or The Incredibles 2. I MUST SEE!
7. We don't want to have responsibility.
We really don't want to be in debt when we graduate, or have to worry about finding a career, or buying a house and having more payments. I, quite frankly, would just like to win the lottery, then all my problems would be solved.
8. We still collect stuffed animals.
I know my bed and my roommate's bed are all lined up with stuffed animals we've had since we were little and some new additions we just couldn't pass up on. Everyone needs a cuddle buddy at night. We are even starting to collect the new Disney Tsum Tsums. It's bad. They're our weakness!
9. We still go to the Disney Store.
Like every weekend. It just makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Brings back my childhood.
10. Lastly, we just don't want to adult.
We don't feel like we are ready to take on what being an adult truly means. It's actually starting to hit us that not everything is going to be done for us by our parents. We will have to be on our own soon and that's kind of scary!
Being a kid was the best and I miss it a whole lot, but I'm sure being an adult will be great too. But something will never change, I will always be a kid at heart like Walt Disney once said, "Adults are only kids grown up, anyway."
