Summer is arguably the most magical time of the year where the drinks are cool and the pavement is hot enough to fry an egg. Classes are out, and you’ve told your parents that your job as a lifeguard will not only boost your resume for medical school, but also help you save money for the ever-vague “future”.
But this summer, instead of playing that pop-hit on repeat, pick up a book while you laze around an office or pool.
1. It’ll help pass the too-hot days.
No matter where you live, you’ve experienced the few days each summer where it’s 90+ degrees and you literally refuse to step outside. Stay in the comfort of the A/C and spend it with a good book.
2. Reading keeps you sharp for the fall semester.
Unfortunately, summer always fades away and we have to exchange our pool time for study time, so this summer, multi-task and build your vocabulary by reading without suffering through the “MCAT for dummies” book.
3. You can reminisce about your childhood with a few classic young adult books like Harry Potter or even Twilight.
They’re easy reads and bring back the bittersweet memories of falling in love with a vampire.
4. It’ll make you a better person.
According to several new studies, reading a fictional narrative can make you better at empathizing as well as more honest. Check out the research here
5. Your friends will be impressed.
Being well-read is a great way to toss your hair and dominate the competition at a local trivia Tuesday.
6. It’s cheaper than a movie.
A library card or even an electronic book is definitely cheaper than a 2-hour movie, and it will keep you occupied for longer than the latest summer blockbuster.
7. You look sophisticated and hipster.
Being the chick at Starbucks with an e-reader and a latte is so mature and mysterious.
8. Stay in the loop.
Nonfiction books are a great way to gain a new perspective on anything from the environment to politics.
9. It's an easy pick-me-up.
If you’re home for the summer and away from college friends, reading is a great anti-depressant until you and your college family are reunited.
10. Reading is a great way to relax.
College is stressful as it is, so taking time during the summer to truly unwind and temporarily escape as a great way to rejuvenate your mind and creativity.
