10 Reasons Going To The Same College As Your Older Sibling Is Cool
Morgan D Cunnyngham

Now I’m the middle child of three.

My older sister Cassidy goes to Mizzou and my little brother Adam, who isn’t that little anymore, is a senior in high school.

So this article is in dedication to Cassidy who is about to graduate and Adam in hopes that he joins me next year to be a true son.

1. They already know where most of the buildings are.

Coming from a high school with one main school building that I had classes in to Mizzou which has 357 buildings, it’s nice to have my sister who already knows where most of the buildings are located at. She also knows all the short cuts so thank you sis because that means I can sleep in just a little bit later!

2. Registering for classes are a breeze with their expertise.

“Come to college” they said. “It’s fun” they said. College is fun but trying to register for classes is like trying to change your flat tire with your spare which is also flat. You are just out of luck and it is a pain in your behind. To even look up classes, you have to go to this grey boring box that looks like it belongs in 2003.

3. They can recommend classes to take.

Future freshman get ready to ask “what is the class like” and the administrator giving you a vague answer saying the professor is good, their class may or may not require a clicker, and it’s just a really good interesting class. I have got this spill so many times that I have stopped asking my administrator and started asking friends and my older sister if they know or heard if this class is good.

4. They can make you food/ you can swipe them in.

Now this is probably one of the most important points because food is the way to my heart. However, If I am running low on swipes then my sister can whip something together for me since she has a kitchen and is a good cook. Don’t tell her I said that though. Right now though I have an abundance of swipes so it looks like we will have many sister dates at the dinning hall.

5. You can bring less clothes to college because sharing is caring.

This would probably be the next important point considering I am a girl who likes clothes. There have been many times already where my sister has asked to wear a certain article of clothing of mine and I have also asked her also. Even if/ when my brother goes to Mizzou I will definitely be taking advantage of his t-shirt stash.

6. Odds are if you want to go to an event so does your sibling.

Now this is especially true because there has been several times that Mizzou After Dark has held events that I really wanted to go too but couldn’t find anyone to go with so I asked my sister and she wanted to go also. So score I didn’t have to go by myself!

7. Home doesn’t feel as far away when they are there.

Home is basically a four hour drive with the one food stop and bathroom stop calculated into the trip. So even though I know I can basically go home anytime I want to, it is just super nice that I have my sister up here with me because the distance doesn’t seem that far away when another family member is so close to me.

8. Sleepovers, sibling talk, and having a shoulder to cry on is never that far away.

Sleep overs normally stop in high school but for my sister and I we get to have sleep overs long after high school ends. We also get to have sibling talk where we can use code words that only us know. Plus, I always know that I have a shoulder to cry on when I have had a bad day, boy trouble, or when a school project is kicking my butt.

9. The drive home is basically a road trip.

AUX cord. I can listen to the radio and be just fine but my sister needs her music. So we normally take her car when we go home and she always plays her favorite jams. On the way back to CoMo one time we played every Miley Cyrus song on Spotify plus all the good old jams we grew up too.

10. You know at least one person that has your back no matter what.

Everyone needs that one person that they can rely on to be there for them when things get too much. I have that with my big sis and it is honestly the best thing ever. No matter what is happening, nothing is too important for siblings.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
